Any hope that Lucky Jim Engles had finally learned how to coach a winning basketball team went down early in the first half today, as the Lions made a total mess of things against a mediocre opponent this afternoon Athletic Director Peter Pilling's prize candidate for worse coach in any sport in Columbia history, demonstrated a complete inability to coach a D-I basketball team as his players showed no learned skills whatsoever in the first half of their final pre-conference before the Ivy League schedule begins this weekend. Running an offense without any set plays, screens, cuts or anything else is not very easy to do, but Engles' players did that in the first 20 minutes. Playing basically a five guard offense with a 6'10" player on the outside, may be an acceptable new strategy for winning basketball games, and, if so, I apologize for my ignorance. Hopefully, the new coaching strategy will help the Lions to pull this game our in the second half.

The OT was a master class in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Ugly and dispiriting loss after a tantalizing second half against a mediocre opponent.

Excellent second half comeback by the Lions to force overtime which resulted, unfortunately, in still another disappointing overtime loss as Engles' team made one mistake after another towards the end of the game including shot clock and five second violations. What is it about Engles that he can't win any close games?

When a team looks lost on the court, as we did in the OT, that is when a good coach can right the ship. And why wasn’t Tavroff on the Court in OT to stabilize our front court.

I'm uncertain what you mean about utilizing Tavroff to stabilize our front court. He's a powerful player with loads of potential, but lacks experience. Our only skilled big man is Bedri, but for whatever reason his playing time has been limited thus far this season and we rarely get the ball to him down deep. Josh O is very athletic and can score from underneath the basket, but he does not match up well yet with taller players. Of course, having back a healthy Liam Murphy for all or a part of the Ivy League season would strengthen our front court significantly.
