The very first Ivy League game of the 2022-23 season comes in Manhattan. The competition tightens up in league play, but Columbia is still one of the worst teams in all of D1. It'll be nice to see how Yale comes out after a long Christmas break.

We're seeing early on where Yale's biggest weakness has been in the noncon and will be in conference (unless they fix it). It doesn't matter how good you are at half-court D if bad offense leads to transition opportunities for the opponents.

Well, Yale learns two lessons here: when you're at the front of the pack, you get teams' best effort, and when you mess around in conference, you can't expect to get away with it.

Columbia hit several big shots (they weren't particularly good ideas but they did go in), the officiating was, uh, Ivy League standard, and the Bulldogs learn a hard lesson the hard way.

Even apart from all the other stuff, you simply cannot go 10/18 from the line and expect to win a game.

Matt Knowling was clearly rusty in the first half, which was not terribly surprising since it was his first game in about a month, but he was back to his usual self in the second.

so wasLiamMurphy, who was out for a month or so. I would suggest not coming up with lame excuses—-just congratulate Columbia on a good game and move ahead.

Yes, Murphy and Knowling are definitely equally important to their respective teams, it's true. I wish Columbia nothing but the best of luck in 12 of their next 13 games.
