For the season, McMullen has been one of the better defenders. Last night, maybe not. I do think that was a bit of a different look than we have shown previously. McMullen usually plays for Dingle or Slajchert, rather than with them. Not sure if (or how) that might impact defensive matchups and who he is guarding. Also not sure why we tried that look, but in the small sample the starters were minus 5 for the game while playing together.
Maybe it softened them up for subsequent rotations.

..except that coach (John Gallagher--former Penn assistant who took the Hartford job and got them to the NCAAs) quit before these games were played

Maybe McMullen was in there to see if he could generate more offense as a pure point guard that could setup the shooters. It obviously did not work, but maybe they wanted to see it for 5-10 minutes because it is something they need.
They just don't seem to generate lots of open 3-point looks. As noted earlier, Martz should be shooting more. Dingle and Slachert can get open on their own while Martz (and Charles) need help. Dingle and Slachert are both very good players, but the offense is just unbalanced and prone to too much individual play when both are on the floor at the same time.

I'd like to see Thrower in that role. He can definitely penetrate and set up others--could be an interesting 3 guard set with Dingle and Slajchert if they want to go small during some portion of a game.
Frankly, Slajchert is having difficulty of late in getting open.

Had to have been a huge favor to former coach and/or quid pro quo to them agreeing to be cannon fodder in our thanksgiving tournament to fill out field
agree that missing a monday of classes early in the semester is not something to do lightly if at all

I think a whole lot of things should change---I can't believe we play Harvard on a Saturday afternoon. It destroys an entire day of activity in the winter--the students won't come and it simply should be a night game. Everything they do now seems intended to chill the potential crowd at every game.

Not sure that a Saturday afternoon in the middle of the winter discourages attendance. A little history here. In 1979 - the Final Four year and the error of Saturday night Big 5?double headers at the Palestra, Penn’s home game be Princeton (a 1 point win) was played on a winter Saturday afternoon. I also seem to recall another Saturday afternoon game vs Harvard in the last 10 years. For what it’s worth, my recollection is that the 79 game drew roughly 6,500 and the Harvard game was also a 6000 crowd. Doubt we get that this week.

You simply cannot compare what was happening then and now. Back then, you had weeknight Big 5 doubleheaders that got raucous crowds. Playing a one-off day game wouldn't change the interest. Now, it's going to be in the 50s on a short winter day and everyone is going to want to be outside....I know I am. Night games would just have more appeal.

Actually there are a lot of younger alums, both former players and not, that like afternoon games a lot for kids, i think princeton at 7 on effectively a sunday hurt attendance
