The Columbia Men's Basketball Team is trailing Brown 40-35 at halftime at Levien Gymnasium in a game where the Lions are trying to win their third Ivy League game of the season, The Lions who are 2-10 in the Ivy League have already doubled the number of Ivy Wins they achieved in the each of the last two seasons. A third win today is likely to assure Coach Engles another season or two as Columbia's head coach. Mike Martin, Brown's Head Coach has a somewhat better record than Engles,

Update: Columbia lost to Brown 84 to 73 in a game that the Columbia announcer described as a "Humongous Win" for a Brown team that is contending for a playoff spot in the Ivy League Tournament. Columba Coach Engles was unable to win his third Ivy League game of the season, but has one more chance next weekend against Cornell. Columbia has already clinched its third consecutive Ivy League finish under Engles which may assure him of another contract extension. Bedri missed game with an ankle injury which undoubtedly will be used by Engles' supporters as a reason for his remaining as Columbia's Head coach ad infinitum.

From my vantage point here is what I saw, why we lost. In the first few minutes Tavroff went down and we had no front court presence. We actually outshot Brown but were killed on the boards.

Tavroff went down? Was he injured too?

Tavroff went down hard. Looked like an ankle. We had no front court presence thereafter. We played hard but made some bad passes and had too many defensive lapses. Plus we should have had more three point plays in crunch time.

Thanks. Minus both Bedri and Tavroff, it's noteworthy that we stayed in the game.

We had a chance to steal the game but at crunch time we forced some ill advised drives, made one pass too many leading to turnovers and inexplicably did not seem to have a plan for providing our shooters with three point opportunities. But this game turned on the woeful inability to rebound on either end. Our guys make our shortcomings worse by not boxing out. We could really have used Harding this year. He was our only real rebounder.

The Columbia Men's Basketball Team is once again the worst team in the Ivy League having clinched its third consecutive last place finish. That's a Hall of Shame achievement by the Columbia Coaching Staff.

Post game interview with Engles was quite somber. Robledo was also interviewed. Final stats tell the story—Brown almost doubled us on the boards—margin was 17. Our leading rebounder was DLR. Not sure why Stankard, Murphy and Josh O can’t do better, but from my vantage point we do not box out.

To your points, first, Murphy and Stankard are outside shooters and that's it. Neither one of them knows how to play inside, whether on offense or defense. Murphy is obviously talented, but missed nearly all of the pre-conference games due to a serious foot injury. Engles current supporters, if any, will point to Murphy's injury as a reason for granting Engles still more time to mess up the Columbia Men's Basketball Program. Unlike, Murphys and Stankard, Tavroff can play in the paint, but is way behind his opponents in many ways, Next, Josh O is a very athletic player, who, unfortunately, has forced to play the center position where he is undersized and not very skilled. He's a nice player though and, hopefully, will improve despite the coaching issues. Third, Robeldo and Thompson are both talented players, but they were both underutilized this past season by Engles and his coaching staff. Fourth, the one solid rebounder on the Columbia roster going into the season was Patrick Harding, and, has happend so many times during the Engles Era his name disappeared from the roster before the season started. I have no idea what happened, but the mysterious disappearance of players during the Engles Era was and still is baffling. Then we had this big center from Florida who also apparently left the team at the start of the season for whatever reason. That is also baffling particularly in the context that at least two other players that Engles recruited saw practically no playing time during their Columbia careers. Why did Engles recruit players who never contributed? In conclusion, Engles has coached the team to its third consecutive last place finish in the Ivy League. We are ranked as one of the worst teams in Division I Basketball. I feel sorry for the players.

Josh O can be a nice front court player if he can finish around the hoop and develop a jump shot, but he is not a center. Stankard has lost his confidence in his three point shot. He passed up a few on Saturday. Agree on Murphy. I agree that Robledo can and should be used more, but Thompson needs an off season in the weight room and about 25 more pounds to be able to play on a regular basis. DLR needs to play 35 minutes with this line-up. When he was rested with about 9 minutes to go Brown restored its lead with a 9-0 run. Brown and Noland are good players who will get better. Tavroff is a big body who can give us 15 or 20 useful minutes. Bedri has potential but also needs to get much stronger. McLean and Cooper are high energy guys and good athletes. I am resigned to the return of Engles. What I can I say that hasn’t already seen said on this board. As BillParcells famously said, “You are what your record says you are.”

Well, for those of you who believe Engles has had long enough, here's an article that agrees with you:

I still think that barring mass transfers out, he should get one more season to see if his kids can play on this level---a lot of Ivy teams are losing key contributors after this year.

I think that Engles can point to the fact that his team hasn’t quit on him and has played hard all season. i thought that the Brown game showed that he has some legitimate talent in the backcourt. My guess is that he will get another year unless he decides on his own to call it quits. Speaking of brighter days, check out the story in today’s NYT on Couch the elder and his son former Columbia star Sean Couch, who averaged over 21 PPG in 1987 and was drafted by the Pacers. The story mentions that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was interested in coaching Columbia 20 years ago. I wonder how that would have worked out.

Of course I still wonder if we should have given Joe Jones more time. I was never sure if he left of his own accord. But his record was better than Engles’ by a long shot.

Fair comparison. Jones inherited the Armond Hill team, which was brutal. Engles was left nothing by Smith coming off a very good year. Jones reached mediocrity with Columbia, nothing more. Engles has not. Jones has been a little better than mediocre with BU.
