Let me repeat the gist of my original post here in simple terms. In order to tie for the title and to make the tournament, Penn has to win three games in which it will be the underdog, including two on the home court of a team that has won the last 8 straight games against Penn.

To do that it will have to elevate its game above the considerably improved level it has achieved over the last seven Ivy games, six of which have been at home.

I sure hope it does. If so, it will have achieved a level of excellence we have not seen since Fran left. That would be significant because of what it would say about Steve's ability to reach the level, that I, for one, hope for. This board has been full of similar criticisms beginning with his hiring. Qualifying again for the Ivy Tournament does not negate that criticism, winning the next three games would.

Is that the only way for Donahue to redeem himself? If he loses in the ILT final on the road, is he a vastly different caliber coach than the one who wins all 3? Just throwing out a rhetorical question.

Penn will, at worst be a 3-5 point dog this weekend. Should they win convincingly, they would be no worse than pickem in the first round against PU. Of course, if Yale loses either of its next two games, that changes everything.

Unless you hold that something has changed since 2017.

Besides the pandemic issues already cited, the NIL has arrived in force.

What I’m wondering is which Ivy is going to be the first to figure out how to put the league’s patented holier-than-thou sheen on it and make it OK for some of their billionaire alums to start writing 6 and 7 figure checks to recruits.

That could offset scholarships for sure. Just have a feeling that Penn won't be the first.

I have been wondering the exact same thing since NIL came into being. From what I've heard, though, there's some sort of agreement between the schools to not engage the nuclear option of a 'Harvard Collective' (or whichever school) in which a deep reservoir of cash becomes the greatest Ivy recruiting tool of all time.

I think Penn has a process in place to review particular Nil deals a student athlete may enter into. Let’s call it a clearinghouse for lack of a better word. I have no idea what that process involves or if there are constraints on types of deals permitted.

I saw just recently that Penn fb recruit Cardin Olsen just signed an NIL. I’m pretty sure Kayla Padilla has a couple. Clearly the monetary value of these arrangements is not the same as very marketable names receive at Power 5 programs.

Good luck to the entire team ... they have played hard and put themselves in a position to achieve their ultimate goal. While I might've been critical in the past of the recruiting efforts I hope that was not mistaken for the quality and integrity of the young men on this team, a few of who I obviously know quite well and several of whom I've gotten to know. If so, then I apologize. Wishing the boys and all the great posters and supporters of the program best of luck

Yeah, I mean it's not like Penn has any top notch business schools that they might wish to utilize.

I don’t think anyone read any disrespect for the Quaker players on the current roster into your comments. I know I did not.

What I am interested in is how your assess their prospects both tomorrow and in the tournament.

Your feedback has always been excellent, nychoops. You bring real knowledge, balance, and passion. Some of the rest of us could learn a thing or two.

Good luck to the Quakers!

To be honest, I don't' think I could imagine Ivy alumni doing big enough NIL deals to matter. At the Power 5, you have sponsors that actually get something back from an NIL deal.

Evidently Penn uses an app called SPRY to track NIL interest on both sides. Penn alumni have always subsidized certain athletes with cushy internships. I don’t know for sure, but I feel almost certain that there are Penn athletes with NIL relationships. I also feel certain that there are more than a couple alums that might be part of these relationships.

Further, I would bet all other Ivies are similarly involved.
