Will Charlie Brown finally kick the football? This is Brown's fourth year of needing one specific win to make it in, but they're not playing Penn in that game for a change.

In Brown's favor, they lost to Yale by just three in JLA in a game where Yale shot 8-12 from three and attempted 17 more free throws. Matt Knowling also played in that game, and it's not yet clear that he'll play this weekend.

In Yale's favor, Brown had 28 from Lilly, including 6-12 from three, and still lost. Owusu-Anane is also banged up, and Brown is already a bit thin up front. Yale is also, to put it mildly, playing better now than they were when they were 1-3 going into their first game against Brown.

If Knowling plays, I think it will be hard for Brown to come away with a win. Yale's playing their best basketball of the year right now, and they know that they need a win to earn a championship.

Question is whether Brown will play it differently if Cornell manages to lose to Columbia earlier in the day and thus clinches the 4th spot before the game.

I just can't see that happening (Columbia has been dismal away from Levien), but true, that's another factor.

Cornell has lost 5 of their last 6, however. Just noting that it could happen if this represents a true tailspin rather than being weak on the road when most of their road games were 2nd half.

Great interview with Coach Jones on local TV. He tells an amusing story about Pete Carril being a jerk to him without cause in his first year of coaching for Yale (I'm editorializing, he told it much more positively).

Yes, I think Cornell is just the flip of Penn’s season. They just had all the tough road games late. 4 of the 5 losses are road losses to the top 4 teams in the league (besides Cornell). Obviously the home loss to Harvard is bad, but other than that, this is just the schedule making a good team look great in the first half and bad in the second.

I’ll be shocked if the Columbia game is close.

Clearly, as Penn fans, we want to win our game, watch Cornell win and then leave it to Brown in a win or die situation.

I think Penn matches up better against Brown than Cornell, but at this point, it really doesn't matter.

LOL---Carril dressed dowm a scared young coach over not having a film guy with the team on the road and Jones is happy to be mentioned in the same breath.

I did like how he is confident he can get the 110 wins to pass Carril in 5-6 years.

Ha. Maybe the ivy will be in the superconference discussion after all?

I listened to a few podcasts w James lately. most of the themes were repeated. 1) he has no idea why 200 wins is significant bc he doesn't delineate; 2) carrill was a jerk to him 3) more optimistic on knowling getting back by the tourney and 4) he would likely take another job IF he thought he had a path/chance at a final 4

The q is can we play better if knowling comes back bf the tourney than we did the last time he came back from injury
We better

I gotta say it feels a lot different now than it did back then. Much more flow to the offense and better communication within the defense. Knowling was on fire back then and it was covering for a multitude of sins. Poulakidas is also playing much much better; he had a rough start to the season.

20 Ivy League wins a year would really be impressive.

Yeah, even if we do add Stanford and Rice.

Pete Carill never did that!

(I assume he thought the guy was telling him he was 100 overall wins shy rather than conference wins. 20/season is about the pace Yale has won at recently, so that's not too unreasonable.)

The first half had a lot of slop both ways. Yale jumped out to an early lead and looked clinical doing it, but then Brown upped the intensity and managed to force Yale into some bad possessions (sometimes aided by uncalled fouls, but I can hardly accuse these refs of calling too few fouls). The Bulldogs played a lot of bench players a lot of minutes in that half. Hopefully the starters will come out fresh.

MBeng not giving Lilly any breathing room here in the second half. Tough matchup for Brown.

Bez Mbeng deserves his flowers. 10-12 from the floor, 27 points, and all while holding Kino Lilly down to a relatively pedestrian performance. Yale has gotten three amazing performances from three different players in three consecutive games. And all came without Matt Knowling.

Yale spotted the rest of the league two games (@COL, home vs. DART) and still won the league. What a turnaround.

and the year after losing the ball dominant Azar swain
They lose matthue cotton for the year who I and James expected to have a huge senior year ...knowling played against d and c but to finish it like this without him is a solid coaching job

But now the new season starts and it doesn't matter

There were moments where Yale uncharacteristically looked a bit nonchalant (even cocky) and Brown cranked up their effort and intensity to go on runs. But down the stretch, the Bulldogs refocused and made it home.

To start 1-3 and win the top seed is one hell of a job. I am going to bet no team in Ivy history has done that and won the title.
LET'S go BRU-no (duh. nuh. nuh-nuh-nuh)

To me, at least in the second half, Yale had this in the bag. They’re such a tough, well coached team. And when you have such a stalwart defender as Mbeng who provided such an unexpected offensive bonanza (has to be Ivy POW by acclamation), there really wasn’t much Brown could to do counter it.
