One year after Saint Peter's magical run, Princeton pulls an epic upset and FDU becomes the second 16-seed to win.
INFINITE MADNESS.

It's even more insane when you consider FDU is in the Dance because of a technicality.
As many here know, Merrimack actually won the NEC conference tourney (and regular season title) but wasn't allowed to participate due to D-I transition rules.
I thought FDU's coach Tobin Anderson was insane for going on record to say that Purdue looks more beatable the more he watches them. But turns out he was a mad scientist - it worked.

I'm guessing that Purdue never wants to see another team from Jersey. IIRC, Rutgers beat them once this season as well.

Their best win for FDU before today was 191 Kenpom ranked St. Joes. Their second best win before today was 303 Kenpom ranked Texas Southern on Weds in play-in game.
Today they beat 8 Kenpom ranked Purdue. Unreal. Purdue said, hey Virginia, hold my beer we're going to lose to 275 Kenpom ranked FDU.
UMBC was at least ranked 166 and had 25 wins and two top 100 wins before knocking off Virginia, lol.

FDU:
Lost at Hartford on November 30, after which they were Pomeroy #347.
Did not win their conference (NEC) regular season title. Did not win their conference tournament, losing to first place Merrimack. Awarded the NEC automatic bid because Merrimack is transitioning into Division 1 and was ineligible for the NCAA tournament.
Pomeroy #312 going into the play-in game. Pomeroy #299 going into the Purdue game. Now at Pomeroy #275.
The FDU women were losing at Columbia in the Women's NIT and missed the greatest moment in school sport's history.
P.S.: Merrimack, the actual NEC regular season champion and tournament champion is coached by Joe Gallo, a former assistant at Robert Morris to Andy Toole (Penn '03) and a former assistant at Dartmouth.

I wonder if Merrimack monitored this game.

It will be a long time before we see another team with the same credentials repeat this result.

Wasn't the same thing said last year, after St. Peter's beat Kentucky and Purdue?

St Peters was much more highly ranked than FDU--a sub 300 team as it went into this tournament.

Yes, that is the point I was trying to make. St. Peters was somewhere around 200, I think.

I was thinking more about tournament seedings. Last year, Purdue was a #3 seed and St. Peter's was a #15 seed.

Right, but seedings are often not accurate representations of the true strength of teams. FDU was a true 16. Princeton really should be a 13-14. Florida Gulf Coast was horribly underseeded. The advantage is when you are underseeded that if you manage to win that first game, you actually have a decent change of making the Sweet 16. I can see Princeton beating Missouri--Penn played them even for most of the game early in the season when Charles, MLL and Mosh all played 19 minutes or more

That win over Arizona really gave them this game. Missouri was a team I think we all thought Princeton could beat. But I don't think Yale or Penn would have gotten here. So the right team won.

As for the NJ angle, maybe Rutgers will deign to play Princeton, even if it distracts them from their traditional rivalry with Nebraska.

1. #16 beats #1 seed (only second time in history)
2. Had to win a play in game of #16 seeds, so even further disadvantaged against Purdue. First time a play-in #16 seed had ever won a game against a #1.
3. Did not win its own conference championship game.
4. Won a grand total of 4 games last year!!
Yeah, I would say this was a highly unusual constellation of circumstances.

I still struggle to figure out why Rutgers is in the Big 10.
I hate what big time college football has done to the basketball landscape.
