Georgetown poaches Ed Cooley from Providence.

How's that going over up there? Frankly, I wasn't too impressed with his floor coaching in games I have seen of Providence.

I have no information here. I’m guessing that Cooley figured he’s done everything he can do here and he might as well take the money that Georgetown is offering. He probably has more upside there than he could have at PC.

A lot more downside, though. That's going to be a tough place to win....same as Pitino at St John's. But Cooley is no Pitino in his ability to tap AAU sources for the best players money can buy.

Cooley said all the right things at his introductory press conference at Georgetown yesterday.

We will see if he can deliver...

The Providence AD was clearly unhappy at the way this went down, said he first learned of the offer when Cooley told him last Sunday and that this is not the way he would expect business to be conducted in the Big East. As he said "It's not a good look."

If Providence can honestly say that it has never hired a coach directly from a conference rival, then fine. But I seriously doubt such is the case...

This should be an all-or-nothing proposition. It can't just be a gentleman's agreement against conference rivals hiring the men's basketball head coach.

You mean in any other sport? I have no idea if it is different in other sports, but it does seem to be quite unusual in basketball. Had never happened in the Big East, and Glen Miller is the only instance I can recall in the Ivy (and that wasn’t real well received, either). It’s done and there isn’t a rule against it. But I totally get Providence being peeved.

We can agree to disagree.

But if Providence is arguing that Big East teams should not poach from their Big East brethren, then I think it should apply to all coaches. That goes from the head MBB coach to the goalies' coach in women's soccer.

Yes, Glen Miller got taken from Brown. But Courtney Banghart, Roger Hughes, Dave Rackovan, and Seitu Smith were all taken from Dartmouth by Ivy competitors. We also had a women's coach taken by Yale, but I'm blanking on her name and sport.

I get that Providence is angry that Cooley viewed Georgetown as a step up. But all's fair. And I can only assume that Georgetown offered Cooley more money than he was getting at Providence...

Men's basketball coaches moving within a conference.

SEC (1997): Tubby Smith leaves Georgia for Kentucky.
Atlantic 10 (2001): Jim Baron leaves St. Bonaventure, his alma mater, for Rhode Island.

I am sure there are other examples in men's basketball and in other sports.

Last night, the CBS reporters said that Kansas State's head coach was taken from Baylor's staff.

In football, Jimbo Fisher comes to mind. Will try to come up with others if I get a chance...

I seem to recall that there were several conferences which had a rule preventing athletes from transferring to another school within the same conference.

If a conference doesn't have a blanket rule like that for coaches, why not just write it into the coach's contract, if it could be done in such a way that wouldn't be restraint of trade?

On the goalie coach thing, it’s pretty standard that a promotion isn’t an issue. So if you’re an assistant and you’re getting a head gig, of course, go for it. Where conference schools get more agitated is situations like you describe where the Yale job is perceived as a better job than the Dartmouth job. As a conference, you want to avoid those situations because they can create a permanent hierarchy that is bad for the league. The league had problems with Penn poaching Miller, and there was enough consternation about it that Penn was prevented from bringing in at least one major transfer along with him.

The money thing becomes more complicated, too. Did Cooley give Providence a chance to match? If not, I doubt Providence is going to just say this is all peachy.

It appears that Texas Tech had similar hurt feelings when Chris Beard left for Texas.

I presume that the extra cash that Providence will get from UConn's championship has put the Providence AD in a better mood...
