Nasi Simmons '24, looks like a terrific prospect and at least the second outstanding women's basketball player to choose Columbia over Harvard in the last few months. I wonder if Coach Griffith has already completed her '23 class, which is known to include some very promising players. Do we know if Kitty Henderson's younger sister will be wearing Columbia Blue next year. Finally, are you really surprised that the MBB coach failed to send a letter to the alumni base explaining the season? What is there for him to explain about Columbia's third consecutive worst in category performance. And, don't forget that Pilling has already paid the MBB Coach millions

Yes, Fliess (sp?) Henderson will be attending next year. Both she and Griffith have announced it.
I can't find anything on line about Nasiha Simmons, but it certainly looks as if she can shoot. Since several other schools were also in pursuit, I'm sure she'll be a valuable addition to the lineup.
Lastly, Davis was going to go to Princeton, but decided to follow Griffith to Columbia. Doesn't that count as a Columbia over Princeton decision?

One thing I’ve noticed about Griffith… she likes to recruit players in that 5’-9” to 6’-1” range. Kitty Henderson at 5’-10” was the shortest starter on the team this year and she averaged 7 boards in the post-season.
On a related note, I’m curious if Griffith will bring someone in from the transfer portal. She missed out on Mackenzie Forbes a couple years ago.
And where will KD land? I hope she ends up on a Top 20 team.

I didn’t know Davis turned down Princeton.
I believe Abbey Hsu’s final three came down to Columbia, Princeton and Tulane.

Pete, the other incoming commit who chose Columbia over Harvard et al is Riley Weiss, the Florida 4A Player of the year, and an outstanding outside shooter like Abbey Hsu.

Gotchya, I didn’t realize she was so highly recruited. Per her Twitter account, she also had offers from Princeton, Penn, Brown, Wake Forest, Ole Miss, Pepperdine, Seton Hall, St John’s, and a handful of other northeast schools. Wow.

Emily Montes is an excellent player who, I believe, committed to Columbia very early in her high school career. Columbia is likely to have another fantastic basketball season next year with Abby and Kitty as the team leaders. However, the competition in the Ivy League will be fierce.

Riley Weiss will be in there, as a second offensive option to take the pressure off Hsu.
Our biggest dropoff will be at center, where we will miss Davis' offense.

I think one of Griffith's greatest achievements was unlocking a system in which a traditional center was rendered useless. She saw that the successful teams in the league are all playing small and leaned into having 5 players who could all shoot the three and score facing the basket. Davis was gifted athletically so she could play against bigger girls, especially on defense, but I'd look to Columbia to keep bringing in long, athletic players who play super hard and can score from anywhere. It's a very entertaining brand of basketball.

I had two issues with the lineup this year: i thought that Sienna Durr should have either started or gotten more minutes off the bench as the 6th person, and I also thought that Carly Rivera was overused even though she was a great teammate and a fantastic passer. Otherwise Griffith did a fantastic job.

I certainly believe Columbia will be in the mix for Ivy Madness next season … but replacing seven seniors, especially program altering seniors, is always hard … in all the ways that don’t show up in box score … some we see as fans (are they in the right place / doing the right things on offense – defense) … most we do not see – who is driving practice intensity, weight room workouts, pickup games. Maintaining success is in some ways harder than achieving success ... to the incoming freshman the 8-19 & 4-10 of the 18-19 season is ancient history as a core class on the Roman Empire.
In the way way too early thoughts on next season … I see four tiers:
Harvard & Princeton
Columbia & Penn
Brown & Yale
Cornell & Dartmouth
And any portal transfer is likely to reshape the list
In recruiting, Princeton is the hardest (not sure any Ivy can really compete) – the Tigers have the best financial aid package (could be 10k better vs non HY) … so they are the cheapest Ivy to attend … and they have a decade plus winning tradition … hard to beat out for a kid that they really want.
Harvard and Yale have the financial aid money to compete with Princeton, they just don’t have the NCAA tournament success to displace Princeton – and Penn and Columbia do have the success to represent top 100 programs vs Harvard & Yale. Harvard, if they can build on their NIT run, is in the best position to recruit against Princeton.
This is why Columbia’s NIL program could be a game changer – or if the Ivy League lawsuit results in basketball scholarships – then scholar-athletes will not be choosing Ivy schools based on financial considerations - and the pool of eligible scholar-athletes that consider Ivy will also be larger.

I think Brown is going to surprise a lot of people next year and the year after, they played a group of all freshmen and sophomores and got better as the year went on. Grace Arnolie look like a first team all Ivy talent, for sure.Yale returns all its starters, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you view this season.
And think about this as NIL relates to the Ivy League (and this is all theoretical at this point): any NIL money an Ivy player gets counts as income and essentially will get figured into their financial aid package calculations. So, a nice fat NIL payday would go straight into their school's tuition (assuming they're getting aid to begin with).

Competition will be fierce in the Ivy League next season for the women's basketball championship, but it much too early to predict who is going to be the top one or two tiers. If the Ivy League sports people were smart, they could enter into a lucrative tv contract for women's basketball. It might be interesting to note that the Columbia Women"s Program is at its highest point in its history, whereas the Columbia Men's Program is at its nadir. If we are talking about tiers for next year, then where is the men's program likely to be placed? Is there a fifth tier?

Seems likely that the Harlem Community will finally get the gymnasium in Morningside Park that Columbia tried unsuccessfully to build for Columbia and free of charge for the local Harlem community back in 1968. The City of New York is running out of space to "shelter" the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants, a.k.a "migrants" that are being welcomed to America by the Biden Administration and then dispatched quickly to Gotham. The City of New York has no alternative, but to build gym like buildings on parkland to house the migrants. First to go today is the huge amount of parklike Federal land at Floyd Bennett Field in South Brooklyn. Manhattan doe not have any open Federal parkland to shelter the migrants so the City has to utilize City parkland. I cannot see it happening right now in Central Park or Riverside Park, although it is certainly possible that Migrant Shelters/gyms will be built eventually in both those parks as well.

Thank you. Mia Broom is perfectly suited for Columbia's high speed offense. Coach G is great at developing talented backcourt players e.g. As for Maija Avlijas, that Bob Cousy like behind the back pass on her recruiting film must have caught Coach G's attention along with 25.2 ppg average.
