Per Dana O'Neil:
"The Big 5 is now officially more like the City Six, with the Philadelphia basketball community officially welcoming Drexel as part of a restructuring of the City Series in an announcement Tuesday. The traditional series, dating back to 1955, included Penn, Temple, Saint Joseph’s, Villanova and La Salle."

Cont.:
"Under the new plan, set to debut in 2024, the six city Division I schools will play in two pods of three teams. Temple, La Salle and Drexel make up one pod; Villanova, Penn and Saint Joseph’s are the second pod.
"The podded teams will play one another during the month of November. The pod winners will be matched up in a Big 5 championship game on Dec. 2 at the Wells Fargo Center, the headliner in a tripleheader in which the second- and third-place pod finishers will complete the afternoon of games."

How are they breaking the inevitable ties in the 2 pods?

Pods of 3 don't make much sense. Need 2 more teams and do it like World Cup pods so you get 3 game round robins with head to head breaking ties. I assume head to head will break a tie between 2 teams but if they all end up 1-1, we might have to litigate

The whole point of the pods is playing 3 games instead of 4 (for the big schools primarily Nova).
I would not be shocked if Penn scheduled additional games with schools in the other pod.

Drexel Joins the Big 5 This Fall 04-11-23 01:44 PM - Post#355713

We'll certainly play LaSalle. Pretty sure we'll continue to play Temple. Drexel? Don't know.
I don't think it's primarily about the number of games for Nova or anyone else. I think it's that the Big 5 became totally meaningless in its former form and wasn't drawing any interest---playing all the games in November, students weren't coming, it had lost it's point. Now they will have a big event at the Wells Fargo Center with all the local schools involved. It's a good effort. I just think in terms of a tournament, it's a bit flawed.

Big 5 really lost it's relevance, so mixing it up is interesting. I don't have strong feeling at this point, glad it is continuing in some fashion and let's see. Hopefully we still do play the other teams outside of this.

The key loss there is that Larson was a 100% 3-point shooter this year.
1-1.
We will survive.
