. . .at Auburn, followed by Southern Mississippi or Samford in Game 2. Auburn only a 13 seed, so Penn obviously moved up the rankings some compared to what previous bracketologies were saying.

I’ll make a modest wager on Penn making it out of the regional at 8-1

It’s not over, but Penn leads #13 (#1-seed) Auburn 6-3 top 11th thanks to an RBI double followed by 3 consecutive bunt hits, including 2 squeeze bunts.

It’s over now. 6-3 final in 11 innings. Onto the winners bracket vs. #3-seed Samford tomorrow night, after the top two seeds play an elimination game tomorrow afternoon.

Shame Owen Coady, one of their three excellent normal starters, is questionable with a bum shoulder, or the road to the Super Regional would be looking mighty clear right now. Nevertheless, as good a first day as you can ask for. Fear the pacifists!

Penn up 5-0 after 5 innings with a spot in the regional final on the line. Cole Zaffiro facing the minimum, allowing just one hit off the glove of SS Cole Palis, but a DP followed. He’s thrown just 47 pitches through 5 innings.

Zaffino through 7 innings (80 pitches). Still 5-0.

Now 5-2. Going bottom 9th. Into the bullpen but closer not available as he threw 3+ IP last night. 3 outs away.

Wow! The call stands! We barely hung on, 5-4, but we’re onto the regional final tomorrow night.

That was way more interesting than it should have been, but hey, when you're nominally the worst of four teams, you've got to get some luck here and there. 'Twill be interesting to see how exactly they cobble together the pitching tomorrow assuming that Coady is not available. Nevertheless, again, best you could ask for after two days; let's see if they can get it done now.

Should also be noted that Southern Mississippi dismissed Auburn in the afternoon (as someone on the Auburn board put it, the Road to Omaha turned into the Road to Opelika--a suburb of Auburn ), so they will play Samford tomorrow at 3 Eastern, with the winner coming right back to play us at 9 tomorrow evening. Game 2, if needed, will be on Monday. As I said, our pitching is going to be exciting tomorrow, so I'm rooting for 14-13 in fifteen innings in the elimination game.

These two games have exposed a couple of serious vulnerabilities in this team: 2nd line relief pitchers with control issues (that the coach sticks with too long) and some very jittery defense. Injuries have something to do with this, but their luck is going to run out of they do not clean it up. They are really going to really miss their #2 starter today when the ‘pen has to try and keep it close.

I wouldn't panic too much about the bullpen; Ozmer has been lights out almost all year, and Trop, Sarti, and Zeldin have all been pretty consistent. Sarti had a bad day yesterday, but that isn't typical. I will say that I've been surprised that Shoemaker hasn't gotten more appearances this year, since his stats when he has appeared have been in the same class as the last three; he does seem to have come in more often in the last few weeks, however, and he certainly saved their bacon yesterday. The problem is just that with all of them pitching in the first two games, you probably have to run someone out there who is more questionable and hope they have a good day.

The fielding has been a weakness in the past, but this year there seemed to have been improvement, as they ended up second in the league to Yale in fielding pct. and didn't have nearly as many meltdowns as they have in the past. Henseler has the tools to be a great 3B, but he doesn't execute consistently for whatever reason, which leads to games like yesterday, where he had an absolutely brilliant play early that made a tough chance look easy, but then botched a couple more later. He has ten errors this year, which works out to over 30 in an MLB-length season, so if he wants to progress, he's either got to raise that part of his game something fierce or else switch to a less demanding position. Calvin Brown just needs to concentrate and hold his glove closer to his face. Taylor's throw on the last play of the game looked funny; while it's hard to tell from the TV angle, I wonder whether the umpire got in the way a bit. I will also say that I think he rushed it because the runner was faster than he thought; even a good throw would still have been a bang-bang play.

How about a 1 1/2 to 2-hour weather delay about 45 minutes into the Samford-Southern Mississippi game? We'll see whether the starting pitchers can continue...

I thought Southern Mississippi (#13 RPI, #17 Baseball America poll, #19 coaches poll) was the best team in the Regional, so I'm really pulling for Samford this afternoon. Auburn is #20, #22 and unranked, respectively.

Play has resumed. Weather delay was 2 hours 18 minutes, but Samford starter is back on the hill. Southern Mississippi starter apparently will do the same.

Apparently Southern Miss won and the Penn -S. Miss game will start at 9:52. Is this single elimination?
