He's wearing #3 -- that's Dingle's old number.
Man, that's cold!

Yeah, that seems a little heartless.
Let's hope this guy can help us. According to basketball reference, he was listed as a sophomore on CSUN's roster, but not on either of the two prior seasons' rosters. He was listed at 6'9", 210lbs, roughly the same as Larson. Averaged 1.0ppg, 1.9rpg.
Looks as if he's still a project.

I watched some high school video of him. He looks like he would be a great player for us. We can certainly use a big who can run the floor, finish above the rim, is agile in the paint, and shoot the three. He seemed to have a reasonable touch. That said, Cal State Northridge is one of the worst teams in D1, ranked 50 places below Penn. He seems to have only averaged 10 minutes a game, and has low usage, low efficiency, and nothing that really stands out except for decent rebounding.

Can't figure this one out. If he can arrive ready to use his body and rebound, he'll be fine. We would need that. He can learn the perfect role by watching how the Miami Heat rebounded against the Celtics in this year's Eastern championships and how Bam Adebayo plays defense and passes.

The obvious conclusion is that Dingle was forced out to make room for this new #3.

I just had a peak at the video. Seems to me Walter is a Gus Larson type. I personally felt Gus would really help Penn in time and was disappointed things didn’t work out that way for Gus and Penn.

I'm not going to get too excited over his Hotchkiss tape, but I saw skills there on offense I never saw from Larson and he could easily put another 10-15 pounds on that frame if he hasn't already. I agree with the poster above who said the ability to help out on the defensive boards will be key to his PT, and it appears he is quick enough to cover the 3-4's he would see in our league. Combine that with a reliable baseline 3 and we would have a very useful piece.

I have made forecasting recruits from high school video into a faux science and pastime. I give Walter an A- on tools, but a B- on physical presence for the college game. So he has upside potential to really contribute.
He is quite quick, has interesting footwork and spin moves, and has better than average touch. I didn't see from the video whether he can occupy the paint, clear boards, and play physical matchup defense. His high school moves were impressive, but benefited on his superior size and athleticism. I only saw some evidence of passing, but I suspect he has good potential there. The physical presence seem to be the reason he had limited impact at CSN to date - the same issues why I think Larson was never going to have an impact in college despite tantalizing skills. His development in these areas will guarantee a big role on the team. Otherwise, he will have to contribute as a face-the-basket small forward and be a shooter and penetrator. That is a hard role to fill for big men at Penn. I had high hopes for Holland as a rare player to succeed in this role, but he hasn't to date.

Both Gus and Johnnie remind me of Robert Baker who played for Harvard. Baker had a weight issue in terms of playing stronger frontcourt players but developed into a niece piece as a 4 in that rotation. He had a nice touch from the corner, was a good weak side rebounder and defender and was a difficult match up for Ivy rivals. But - it took him time to develop and find a D1 fit and was never a star.

Well, if he can play at all, a great pickup. Penn desperately needs height and a guy who plays inside who can hit FTs

If Johnnie wants to assure himself a spot in the lineup, he needs to use his body from the waist down for rebounds and defense. He seems to have plenty of other skills to contribute upside, but he won't stay on the court without those two things first.

He was on a terrible team in a not great conference and had more personal fouls than points. Expecting much out of him in the short term seems like a lot of wishful thinking.

I have no expectations ever of new players until they play. He put up some nice HS numbers and didn't play much last year as a freshman. Who knows what we are getting other than a big guy who can shoot?

I would happily take that. Wang was much bigger, though
