He didn't get drafted tonight, but it looks like Tosan got an NBA contract anyway!

The Detroit Pistons are signing Princeton forward Tosan Evbuomwan, his agent @GeorgeLangberg of GSL Sports Group tells @hoopshype.
It doesn't say whether it's a two-way contract or an outright NBA contract, though I'd assume the former. Either way, that's a huge accomplishment - he didn't even have to go through Summer League or training camp/preseason.

Not sure what you mean by "no summer league or training camp) but, unless he signed a guaranteed contract (pretty rare) he will play summer league and join training camp and will have to earn a roster spot likely as a 2 way player (which means he is assigned to the G league but can move between there and the NBA at the teams discretion). Each NBA team is only allowed two 2-way players and teams will have 10-12 players competing for those 2 spots.
Bottom line, Tosan has a shot but the competition from here is very tough. How much he plays in summer league will be a key indicator of what they think.

I believe that he means that he signed a contract (I agree that this is almost certainly a two way contract) "before the summer league." Some players are signed after the summer league, not before.
The mere fact that he was signed within hours of the draft indicates substantial interest.
His summer league performance is key. Teams want to see how her performs against borderline NBA and g league players. I will be watching the summer league games in the next few weeks.

Exactly. I was hoping to enjoy his Summer League games worry-free, but I guess he'll have to go through another evaluation. At least he'll have some priority as an Exhibit 10 versus standard invitees.

Langberg said Evbuomwan had an opportunity to be picked at No. 56 by the Memphis Grizzlies as a draft and stash candidate in Europe “but he wanted to bet on himself.”
I think Tosan made the right decision. It would have been neat to hear his name called but now he still has a chance to make a roster this year.

I would suspect he does not want merely to continue to play ball, or Europe would have been fine. I think his attitude is all in for the NBA. He will gain a better understanding of his talent vs. NBA talent more quickly this way

Look at this.
During the season no one thought he was much of an NBA player. Then because of his performance in the NCAA tournament he was invited to the g league combine. Due to his performance there he was invited to the NBA combine. I don’t doubt any decisions he makes anymore.

It's pretty common for the first SL game to focus on the returning players (NBA or G-League) and draft picks. Especially since there's another game tomorrow.
I suspect Tosan will play some tomorrow and then play heavier minutes in the last couple games. He's gotta be aggressive. I'd like to see him get some buckets first before dishing to teammates.

Same exact rotation as yesterday. Boo. I guess it was all set in stone beforehand. Two more games at least (possibly more if they make the SL "playoffs").
I'm assuming we finally see Tosan in the next games, but who knows what the Pistons are doing? They played 3 projected starters huge minutes and still got beat handily.

Only 15 minutes despite the start. Team-high +16. Made two and-1s layups and got fouled on another attempt. Only miss was an uncalled goaltend. Zero TOs. Clutch block. Coach Jarrett Jack twice praised Tosan's defense while mic'd up.
At least two more games left (one TBD). Hope Tosan gets some real minutes in the final games. Detroit's summer league rotation has been very chaotic.

I caught the last 8 minutes or so. It was so exciting to see Tosan out there. Who was the big that he was matched up against? The guy was quite a bit taller that Tosan but our Tiger played him very well on D.

Tosan has a spot in training camp and their G league team locked up. Clearly their plan was to play him in the later summer games. He will get his chance to develop. He looked good out there.
And I thought the uncalled goaltending should have been a Tosan dunk. Learning curve there. He needs to finish that with authority.

The tall guy was Moses Brown, a 7 footer out of UCLA who has already played in 128 NBA games.

Summer league games are meaningless for Tosan. He is going to the G league. He will get playing time and can work on improving his jump shot. Tosan has two things going for him. He can pass and he can defend. These two attributes can get him onto an NBA roster. We just need to be patient

His development as a shooter will be critical. There are an enormous number of players who can pass and defend that are not on NBA rosters. You have to be able to shoot in addition to those things if you want a real shot to be on an NBA roster. Not as a primary scorer, but NBA players have to make shots when left open, even if they are on the floor for other reasons.

He's also shown a serious knack for scoring through contact. He hasn't taken that many shots in his G-League/Combine/SL games yet he already has like 6 and-ones. Developing a solid 3pt shot is the make or break skill and will take time.
I just want to see him earn a 2-way contract so that his team is actually invested in his success. If he simply joins a random G-League team, it's harder to stick on an NBA roster.

While I agree with you that he needs to improve his shooting I totally disagree with rest of your analysis.
There are NOT a lot of players who can both defend and pass in the NBA. If you watched the combines and summer league, it is obvious that there are innumerable quality shooters out there. However, the NBA values players who can BOTH defend and pass.
Look at it from this point of view and ask yourself, why is the NBA interested in Tosan at all, if he is not much of a shooter?? You can learn to shoot (and i believe that Tosan will do that) and you can improve your defense (he is already well above average). But the ability to see the floor, pass and dish out assists are innate skills. You either have them or you don't. You can't teach them.
If Tosan were an excellent shooter, I believe he would have been a first rounder.
