Any reports on what we are doing this summer with our returning players to make ourselves better? Any foreign trips, summer leagues, etc.?

And shouldn't the incoming women recruits be announced sometime next week?

International Summer Games seems to be a thriving new industry involving thousands of players, coaches and supporting staff. Did anyone see this coming? And, where is it headed?

A month later, and still no announcement about WBB.
Perhaps it means nothing at all; perhaps there are issues with transfers that are complicating the matter. But from the outside, it does seem a bit concerning???

Did you mean MBB? I cannot imagine any problems with WBB. Per Twitter, Megan and company are searching for future Lions in the usual dens and then some.

No, I meant the WBB recruits announcement. The latest I ever remember it was July 6th, and here we are without one, nearly three weeks later.

Upon reflection, I do understand your concern that the new WBB recruits have not been announced yet on the Columbia Athletics Website. While I doubt there are any issues with transfers. I am surprised that for whatever reason there has been no official announcement. Furthermore, when you go to the 2023-24 roster only the returning players are listed which looks weird.

I am surprised that the coaching has allowed this delay. Maybe, the person in the Columbia Athletic Department who is responsible for this screw-up is on vacation.

That's what I meant. But I doubt that it's a question of vacations. Megan will announce when Megan is ready to announce. That she hasn't is noteworthy and gives rise to the concerns I have expressed.

SUMMER UPDATE

    In response to cc66

I would have no concerns over the lack of any official announcement - Cornell and Penn both have all not put out their press releases - the considerations of Coaches and Sport Information Directors typically do not include a fan's desire to know.

Check the Twitter sites of all the recruits - if they still list Columbia, I am sure you are good.

There will be much discussion shortly across the board on what the season schedules have not been posted. I would certainly expect the Ivy part of the season is already known (how could it not be come late July) - it would be great for the Ivy League's marketing arm to have some fanfare in announcing those dates and Ivy Madness. But no sense to build fan excitement.

As for the out of conference schedule - I would expect that 95% of it is known. Likely 1-2 open dates that are still being worked through which keeps the known games a mystery ... here again the schools could begin marketing their schedule piece meal - unless it's an official tournament, I have never seen it done. And I rather have the coaches working till the last minute to upgrade schedules than announce a suboptimal schedule early.

Edited by JDP on 07-22-23 01:16 PM. Reason for edit: No reason given.

Are the same reassurances that applied in July still applicable in August?

Perhaps absolutely nothing is going on, but it is getting very late for the WBB recruit announcement...

Thanks. I was just going to post the announcement when I saw you had already done so.

In brief, it's the 7 we knew about, plus Habti Calvo.

Quite an impressive haul....

Reading between the lines, Megan uses the adjective 'immediate' (as in 'immediate impact') for just two players--Collins and Weiss. So I'll bet them as the most likely new contributors.

Coach Griffith has added an amazingly talented group of players to the roster. The only question now is who is going to start at up front next to Paige Lauder?

Probably Comesana at center, plus Henderson, Hsu, and Collins, with Lauder pressed by Weiss.

Did Comesana play at all last year? What about Susie Raifu or Mary Lebon?

No, she was injured. I never saw much offense from Raifu, so I am just assuming that a healthy Comesana will start ahead of her.

Of course, on this matter, as on several others, I could be completely wrong.

Should be quite a season—we lost a ton of talent but hopefully can “reload” as does Princeton every year instead of rebuilding.

"Reload" is definitely preferable to "rebuild," when your team is coming off a big season. As you said, that's the mold you are looking for. However, what's specially interesting with the Lions is that despite all the graduation losses, Coach G will have more much depth than last year. Even if the team suffers the almost inevitable injury or two, Megan will have a much deeper bench than last year. With maybe two or three exceptions, almost everyone on this year's roster has a chance to be in the starting rotation.

Thanks Chet--nice tribute from Coach G.

Looking forward to seeing how our men fare in their four exhibition games in Switzerland and Italy beginning next week. Good luck to the Lions!

Will be interesting to see what Coach Bagnoli will be doing next at Columbia

Lions win their first exhibition game of their European Tour with Jaden Cooper named as MVP and Noah and Zavian joining him in scoring double figures. Hopefully, a good omen for the coming season.

Agree with you that JADEN COOPER has a "smooth and athletic game>". I think he has all the tools to become one of the Ivy League's best players. Same with McLean. Have you seen a box score anywhere? It would not be nice to see the game stats. Also, it appears that not everyone on the roster made the trip. No first years? Murphy?

I believe the rule (which may be an NCAA rule) on who can attend is based on when an accepted student becomes a full time student ... some schools that happens at the summer classes before freshman year, some it does not happen until 1st day of class in September ... since no all freshman can go, it was determined pre fax machine, that since it would be unfair to some schools, then none can go.

To me this is one of the myopic Ivy decisions .. each school has +/- and for many student-athletes this may be their first trip outside the U.S. Why does the harm to the institutions whose freshman may not attend, out weight the harm to all the student-athletes who do benefit from a foreign trip?

Well Columbia's very nice cultural European Trip is almost done and the Lions have won all four of their exhibition games, but so little detailed information has been disseminated thus far by Coach Engles or the Athletic Department that it is impossible to assess where matters stand regarding the upcoming season. Basically, we have the same players and coaches as last season when we finished in the Ivy League cellar for the third consecutive season.
