The Columbia Women's Basketball Schedule for the 2023-24 Season has just been released and, as expected, it is probably the most challenging Women or Men Basketball Schedule, in the School's history. The Lions will be taking on Duke, Georgia, Florida, and Villanova, among others, as the Lions look to improve upon their 2022-23 Ivy League Championship Season and NIT Championship Final Game at Kansas. With at least four excellent Ivy League teams this year, it will be difficult for the NCAA to deny the Ivy League a second NCAA team bid.

It's never difficult for the NCAA to deny the Ivys a second bid.

Now that is a proper non-conference schedule. But I will be interested how good Villanova is this year after having lost Maddie Siegrist to graduation.

That is an impressive, challenging non-conference schedule… no D-III teams and only one team (Wagner) who finished with a NET ranking lower than 180 last year. Kudos to Griffith for raising the bar yet again.

What’s the over/under on wins vs the 13 non-conference teams? With so many newcomers, I have no idea what to expect.

I think this team will be tough to beat in March, but I’d take the Under on 10… I imagine it will take them at least a month to gel.

You may well be right. The question is who will be the fourth G/F. We know that Comesana will probably be the center, and that Hsu, Henderson, and Collins will start. So who among Weiss, Scolla, Lauder, and Paige will complete the team? My guess is Lauder early based on experience, to be superseded by Weiss later on if she can defend successfully.

I agree with you that Comesana will probably be the starting center at some point, but she missed the entire season last year apparently due to injury so it's unclear how much Coach G can expect of her immediately. On the other hand, Paige Lauder had a tremendous junior year despite having to play with a mask for most of the season. Without Lauder I doubt we would have made it to Kansas for the most memorable game in the Program's History. I see the initial starting five as Hsu, Kitty Henderson, Lauder, Collins and Paige.

Note taken on your comment about Comesana. But Griffith did say that both Paige and Comesana had worked hard to recover from their injuries, and that both had improved. So I think she'll be in there.

The other remaining position is very much up for grabs. If Weiss can defend, her offense would feed a potent offense with 4 players--Hsu, Henderson, Collins, and Weiss--all in double figures. But as you said, Lauder had a good junior year, and may be even better now. She won't be so easy to displace.

Three comments in particular at the presser with MG:

1) She gave high praise to Collins' passing skills, further reinforcing the prospect that she will be starting.

2) She strongly implied that she had originally tried to recruit transfers Collins and Scolla and was therefore quite familiar with them.

3) She said that the offense this year would be more diverse and included more plays.

Although I think they will be tough later on, I suspect they may stumble a bit at the beginning of the season.

Along with everything else, MG is a tremendous recruiter so I am not surprised at all that she reloaded successfully. I do agree with you that the team may stumble a bit at the beginning of the season. However, I would not be surprised at all if the Lions come out on firing on day one. MG has so much depth on this year's team that I expect big thing not only from the starting five, but the back-ups as well.

I've watched a couple of interviews with MG, and presuming I'm reading the tea leaves correctly, it appears you're right: the starting lineup will be Hsu, Henderson, Collins, Lauder, and Comesana. I derive this prediction from 1) her saying that Scolla had "limitations" and was more of a role player like Carmen Rivera; 2) some of the 1st years were coming on faster than others, which I took to refer to Riley Weiss, though it may also refer to others; 3) her reiterated praise for Collins; 4) her reference to Lauder's experience; and 5) her citing Perri Paige's as the 1st backup.

I have not seen any of the interviews you mentioned, but I assume that Coach G will experiment, with various line-ups early in the season. Scoring points is probably not going to be much of a problem for this time, but not having a player taller than 6'1" could be an issue. Having two 6'1" players on the floor at the same time may be necessary to compensate for the lack of height up front.

The interviews I watched are the November 1st media day and Howard Medgal's Locked In.

The Spec. article differs from the interviews because it highlights Weiss more and seems to project a more modest role for Collins.
