"Prep Hoops Illinois, All Suburbs First Team (9/'23)
PG: Gianni Cobb (Homewood Flossmoor). There were a lot of options for the lead guard spot on this squad. We went with the one who brings the most upside and spark. Cobb can score it from all three levels while also being a pesky defender."

(Others: Jack Stanton, Princeton; Morez Johnson, U of Illinois; Jason Jakstys, U of Illinois; and Bryce Heard ’25 undecided 4 star.)

Who's doing the recruiting?

All of a sudden, there seems to be a significant upgrade in the quality of the recruits.

Are you going to faint? A second outstanding prospect with a background similar to Mike Smith. Wow!

I was just going to say that the new recruit seemed quite similar to Smith.

Right on! Smith was also rated as the second best guard in the State of Illinois. He was Coach Kyle Smith's last great recruit. I hope cc66 is still standing. Incidentally, despite the thrill of the moment, I am certainly not going to get very excited until I see that we have at least five solid commitments. Typically, Engles has a two or three man recruiting class and then someone gets injured.

I am not going to faint quite yet, but I do admit to feeling a bit woozy.

It's true we don't yet have five quality recruits, and with our luck, one usually ends up injured. But that begs my original question. Do they have a new coach to do recruiting? Have they changed their recruiting strategy? Because I think Engles could probably do Xs and Os--after all, he did win 30 games with NJIT. Up to now, however, he just hasn't been able to recruit very well. If that changes, it's a whole new ballgame.

If you are indeed feeling"woozy,"my advice is to sit down asap, place your head between your legs and say a prayer of gratitude for Assistant Coach Jake Brown, who I suspect, but do not know for a fact to be our new "mystery recruiter." My guess that Brown is the savior of the Columbia Men's Basketball Program based upon many years of reading books authored by Pat Conroy and others leading me to exclude as possible suspects Engles, and all the other Columbia coaches who have been around the CMBP too long. The other clue is in the Twitter-X to whom recruits write. Finally, under all the circumstances, the fact that Engles may have won 30 games years ago at NJIT is not a confidence builder

Thank you, Hoopsfan, for taking the trouble to find and post all of those links.

Maybe those of you who appear to take particular pleasure at running our staff down no matter what is happening should step away for a while, which is a diplomatic way of putting what I'm actually thinking.

Cobb appears slightly quicker and very slightly taller than Smith, but perhaps a bit less strong. But he's still very young. He also seems to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder, which is usually a very good sign.

FWIW, Kenpom is out, and we're ranked 264,ahead of Dartmouth,267. We are projected
to go 5 & 9 in the IL, 13 & 14 overall.

That's a jump of about 75 slots from last year.

How can Columbia be projected to go 5 & 9 in the IL if we are only ranked ahead of one IL opponent, Dartmouth?

Any updates on Columbia Men's Basketball commitments? I am also curious why there are no longer any foreign players on our Men's Basketball Team? Coach Griffith has three players from Spain and two from Australia on the roster.

Cobb was POY in his conference, which includes some HM recruits.

Last night he led his team to a W in the IL Super Sectional final (someone from IL may have to explain what that is exactly), which appears to be equivalent to the state quarterfinals:

Gianni Cobb basketball; Homewood Flossmore defeats Curie ...

Are we going to play two PGs next year--both Gianni Cobb and Avery Brown?

The competition between the two of them is going to be intense....

Gianni Cobb had a great finish to his year. Prep Hoops Illinois moved his ranking from 22 to 12 and named him the #1 PG in the class. His team Homewood-Flossmoor won the state championship. He was named first team all-state 4-A by the coaches association. He had two late-season buzzer beaters to win big games, including this one:
