I’m the opposite on Laz — I think the effort we’ve been getting from the 4 spot is a good thing. Holland, Laz, and Walter are fairly similar athletically, frankly, and play the position similarly. For whatever reason, Holland got pushed around more in this specific matchup, while Laz did not. I like playing the matchups and/or hot hand at this spot, and I’m not ready to just give up on the season and focus on youth. I want to put the best team out there that we can, and right now that involves playing Laz. Laz and Holland combined are basically scoring the same amount per minute as Clark — it’s just masked by splitting time. And Laz is our leading rebounder per minute and in percentage terms. He should be out there.

I think the transfer portal has made the early season Pomeroy ratings dependence on the previous year’s results increasingly unreliable, with such huge roster turnover year-to-year on so many teams now.
So much for cautioning against citing early season Pomeroy #s as giving a true read on teams at this point. Immediately after I write this we’re getting multiple posts drawing conclusions about long-term program direction from them. Truly hilarious stuff.

If memory serves, Rothschild and Grandieri were successful at the 4. Did Zoller really play much 5? If you go back farther, there was Romanczuk.

I mentioned Rothschild - he was a 4 who initially played some 5 for us. He moved to the rightful 4 when AJ arrived. He became quite a good player after a mixed start. Grandieri? Are we thinking of the same guy? I thought he was a combo guard. Romanczuk was quite good. Eric Moore played quite well too, although that was a much different league then.

I never think Laz looks that great out there, but somehow he manages to get the rebound and gets himself open on the cut. There's been enough data points to show it isn't a fluke. Walter is showing me the same thing, but the data points are fewer.

Sorry I missed the Rothschild reference. Grandieri as an upperclassman played a lot of 4 despite his size as he was an excellent rebounder and scorer from close in. He was also fearless and held his own defensively against bigger forwards.

Laz just isn't a shooter. If his role is defense and rebounding and effort that is fine for 15-20 minutes a game. Brown will help. Would not be surprised if he starts over Thrower at some point.
This team could still be a decent Ivy team. Perkins will do better with experience and the conference schedule will give him some good matchups. In hindsight the light schedule in the first couple of games probably gave us an overly favorable impression of him. More Brown will cut his minutes and usage a bit and let him carve out a role where there is less pressure to score 20 a game.

Perkins looked great against Villanova too. So far, he has looked like a freshman on the road, and like an all-Ivy player right now at the Palestra. Maybe just a small sample size. Obviously the talent is there.

Yes, Danley was the 5 and Zoller the 4. So Zoller was a good one. Paul R was mostly the 5, with Jed Ryan as the 4. Though when we had Geoff owens, he slid both Paul R and Ugonna to the 4 for a season.
Matt Howard and Ryan Betley were pretty good at the 4 for Donahue. Martz too.

Just to be clear on the numbers — our leading scorers per minute are (1) Holland; (2) Slajchert; (3) Laz. We’re getting more scoring out of the 4 position than any other right now. We are probably getting the most rebounds from there as well. The scoring will come down as I assume guys will miss shots eventually (right now Holland and Laz are making almost all their shots). But so far they are more than fine.

They are getting most of their shots from offensive rebounds and cuts, which could be an outcome of good hustle and (gasp) good coaching,

Agreed on Howard, if only really for one season. I know Betley played a lot of 4 in what was a small lineup, but I always thought of him as a 3.
