It will also be a huge shot in the arm if Deven Austin can come back fairly soon.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

This could be a helluva year! The defensive intensity against ODU was unlike anything I can remember from the Tigers in a long time. Last year’s team was prone to occasional lulls on offense when motion stopped and long scoring droughts were the result. This team could be vulnerable to that if they fall too much in love with the three ball and they stop hitting but they have so many weapons this year that seems less likely than past years.

On to Northeastern. One game at a time.

In order to maintain this level of defense we shall need to go 7 or 8 deep. From what I have seen Scott is a definite while the first year kids, unsurprisingly, have a long way to go. Pierce is simply extraordinary and Lee is one of the best backcourt guys we have had in many years. For sophomores to be this good this early is remarkable. We were Tosan-centered while he was here, but now we have a lot of ways to score. Just a great start to a long season.

I believe that Huggins and Davis are closer to becoming major contributors than you may think.

I am among those who see the invisible hand of Berube at work in the energized aggressive defensive play of the men. Maybe Mitch sat the team down and watched the rapid switching and double teaming of the women that has made them so successful as well as fun to watch.
GO TIGERS!

Some of you will remember Bill Tierney picking Pete Carril’s brain during his lacrosse championship streak.

Coaches Henderson and Berube seem to have a genuine rapport. It would not surprise me in the least if they are watching each others’ squads and brainstorming here and there.

Would it shock anyone if both squads cracked the Top 25 this coming week?

The common denominator between the 2 teams is the presence of an otherworldly rebounder. What Mitchell and Pierce do is, as both coaches freely acknowledge, not the product of coaching. These kids have a unique talent based on athleticism and desire. Lots of players have both but lack the nose for the ball. Scoring gets most of the ink but rebounding controls the game. Love watching them play.

A win tomorrow and the women are a lock. A tall order however as Indiana is tough. Their ranking may be a bit deceiving because of the beat down Stanford gave them. Getting ranked for the men may be a little harder to come by as they haven't played the quality of opponents that the women have. They have been impressing people though.

As for Pierce and Mitchell, I think they're gender clones with both being a little undersized for how great they are. What's really impressive is the number of offensive rebounds they get.

I saw (or maybe heard) a quote recently from Coach Henderson that Pierce rebounds like he “mad at the ball”. That same ferocity applies to Mitchell, they are both fearless and relentless around loose balls. In addition to giving their teammates many extra chances and forcing opponents to game plan around them, they set the tone for their teams. Toughness and physical play is part of the Tiger hoops brand this season.

If Ellie could shoot the 3, (a) they’d be separated at birth, and (b) she’d be going to the WNBA.

I'd be happy if she could consistently make her bunny layups. I will admit, though, she showed something new in the Oklahoma game: she made some really nice interior passes and was credited with 7 assists. Last year she had a total of 49 assists in 30 games -- about 1.6 assists per game. If she can find cutters consistently for baskets, that's a new wrinkle to the half-court offense.

You're right. She does miss a few too many shots in close to the basket but her defense and rebounding are so good that you can sort a live with that. Besides, offensively, Ellie earned a lifetime pass for making those two free throws against Harvard in the ILT Championship game. She had an insane 34 rebounds in the two games this week against top25 teams.
