I was sitting at the scorers table. The inbounds pass appeared to me to be caught in the front court by a player who called time out as he was catching the ball. The click went from 3.7 to 2.7. My first thought was "That took a second. Nonsense!"
During the ensuing review the PA announcer informed the crowd that the refs were reviewing where to inbounds he ball. Apparently that was misinformation because after the review time was put back on the clock but the inbounds spot was in the backcourt.
I actually yelled something about the spot to the referee and he replied there are only 4 spots to inbounds the ball. I didn't think the response was particularly relevant. The bad spot cost us a chance, even with the added time.

Even after Allocco and Martini graduate, we got Pierce, Lee and Peters to keep the good times rolling. Not to mention Deven Austin once he's back.
Don’t forget Jack Scott, who is emerging as a very dependable 6th man. As Davis, Huggins and Hicke continue to develop this team is going to have a solid foundation of talent to build on (… but not much height).

I was just a few rows behind you, Toothless. I think the question was whether our player caught the ball in the front court or the back court. It looked very close to me. If in the back court, I think they had to spot the inbounds where they did. If he was in the front court, the ball would have been advanced forward quite a bit. I think Mitch drew up the play assuming the ball would be inbounded from the front court and when the call went the other way, the team had to improvise and it didn’t work out.

On TV it looked like it was in the backcourt. I guess I sort of knew but forgot that they don't go to the exact spot.

I acknowledge my sight line was not perfect. But the whole point of trying the long inbounds pass was to get into the front court. Kind of like a 6 yd out pattern when you need 5 for the first down.

Maybe it was a make-up call for UCLA in'96 when after Lewullis' layup UCLA called timeout in the backcourt but was given the ball in the frontcourt.

I cover the Tigers for IvyHoopsOnline. Please stop by the scorers table to say hello. I am usually in the first seat opposite the Tiger bench.

Like others I was surprised at the location of the throw-in after Pierce caught the ball and called timeout with a few seconds left in the first half. I found a 21-22 version of NCAA men's rules and it's attached. Rule 7, on pages 71 and 72 seems to address the play. My interpretation is that if the ball was in the frontcourt when timeout was called Princeton would inbound the ball at the 28' mark (Section 3, article 2a). If the ball was in the backcourt then "play shall resume at the point of interruption" (Section 3, article 2c) which would have been very close to midcourt, rather than the defensive 28' mark. Other interpretations? Any rule changes on this in the last couple years?

I do not know the current rule but the ref was quick to point out that "there are 4 places from which to inbound ball."

So the ref might not know the rule, per "the point of interruption."
