Ivy opener for the Lions and Quakers. One key to this game will be how the Lions defend Obi down low as they had some trouble with similar post players from USF and Pacific last week.

Penn has a lot of size… Toonders (6’-4”) and Almqvist (6’-1”)… and they have one of the best freshmen in the league, Mataya Gayle. I expect this one to be a lot closer than some might think.

Columbia wins, 79-66. Collins follows 28 in the last game with 19 in this one. Hsu with 14, KH with 13. We played well after an initial lag, but then let Penn get it down to 7 pts. with 4 minutes to go in the final quarter.

Columbia is improving nicely with Cecilia Colllins moving up quickly into the All Ivy League category along with teammates Abbey Hsu and Kitty Henderson. Penn is a well-coached talented young team that should make the Ivy League postseason tournament Based on today's results, Brown is likely to be Penn's only serious competition for a spot in the post-season tournament. Of course, it's much too early to make firm predictions.

Hsu has to favorite for POY but Collins is coming on strong. Lions should have a clear home court advantage for Ivy Madness. Should be a riveting season.

Agreed... Collins is starting to gel nicely with this team. She's been scoring more often (15.0 per in the last nine games) and is in the Top 5 in the Ivy in assists per game (3.6).

I get more impressed each game that I watch Kitty play. She does it all. Columbia got off to a slow start vs Penn... but she had two offensive rebounds and put backs within the first 4 mins to keep the Quakers from jumping out to an early double digit lead. She's 2nd in the Ivy in assists per game (4.6), 10th in rebounds (6.1), and 12th in scoring (12.9). How many point guards get 6 boards a game?

The Lions are also getting solid play from Nicole Stephens, which has been one of the biggest surprises to me this season. She's adept at taking a charge, and has more steals (12) and assists (25) than turnovers (7)! And she can knock down a 3-pt shot on occasion... an invaluable bench player.

Nicole has the second lowest turnover rate (per 40 min) in the league (for players with at least 100 mins played):

Player - Minutes / TOVs / TOV Per 40 mins
Olivia Young - 275 / 5 / 0.73
Nicole Stephens - 248 / 7 / 1.13
Mya Murray - 102 / 3 / 1.18
Isabella Mauricio - 418 / 13 / 1.24

I know it's not a traditional stat, but her 37 to 7 (5.3) 'steals + assists' to turnover ratio is off the charts... Top 5 in the nation? Maybe JDP can check the Her Hoops Stats (HHS) website to see who leads the country in that category. Possibly Rori Harmon of Texas?... she has 93 assists and 37 steals with only 14 turnovers (9.3 ratio).

Interestesting Stat Pete

Looking at the players with at least 1 Steal & 1 Assist with <=5- Turnovers and >= 200 min played, Nicole is 6th.

But I would discount the Dallas and Peebles as not having enough exposure units to qualify - so fourth. But that let me to thinking how best to normalize
