Man the Ivy schedule sucks. It's so spread out and they play on winter afternoons now. It's almost like they are trying to get as few fans as possible in the buildings. Bring back the Fri-Sat games or try and work a deal with the Patriot League to play January games.

I’m old school and miss the back-to-backs too but the 2:00 afternoon games are drawing fans to Jadwin. Nearly 9,000 came to the Princeton men’s two home games (Harvard and Princeton) and the next home game against Penn in two weeks looks like it will draw an even bigger crowd. Almost 1,900 came to Tiger women’s home game against Columbia. Maybe your teams just suck.

The back-to-backs were brutal, tough on the players physically and mentally. Playing on the road at Columbia and Cornell was grueling. Quality of play was diminished and risk of injury enhanced. Once a week is much better in every regard including academics which are, after all, the paramount concern. Coaches prefer not to have to prepare for two teams at the same time. I do not understand the criticism based on attendance concerns. Low attendance in the IL is more a function of lack of student body support to a far greater degree than the schedule.

Here we go:
Yale (-5.5) at Harvard. Yale should win. Both squads have been inconsistent but getting better (and healthier). Harvard victory would mean a great deal for 4th tournament spot. Crimson need to combine shooting from last week’s first half with effort from second half vs Brown. Can Ajogbor slow down Wolf?
Penn (-1.5) at Columbia. Chance for an improving and healthier Lions (+ De La Rosa) to break through against a staggered Penn (- Slachert). Penn in midst of 4 road contests (Brown, Yale, Princeton). Not a must-win, but a dangerous game for the Quakers to lose. Harvard successfully prevented Penn from having many open 3’s by handling Spinoso without doubling, can Columbia do the same?
Princeton (-2.5) at Cornell. Game of the day and first matchup of the league’s upper tier (3-0) teams. Should be entertaining, but merely a precursor to Ivy Madness.
Brown (-3.5) at Dartmouth. Game Brown (1-2) needs in order to maintain current advantage in race for 4th.

The large (for Jadwin) crowds of 4,800+ for Harvard and 3,800+ for Dartmouth, both 2 pm tipoffs on a Saturday and a federal holiday Monday, respectively, included the usual hard-core Princeton fans from the greater Princeton area. But what really seemed to inflate the numbers were families with kids, most likely from Mercer County and surrounding areas. Sure, the quality and growing notoriety of the Team must have been a factor, but timing of the tipoffs made it a lot easier to sell tickets to those kid-heavy families. Tipoffs that conflict with dinner time or after-dinner time just don’t have the same marketing appeal to those families.
I will be interested to see what sized crowd the Cornell marketing team can bring to Newman Arena for the Cornell-Princeton matchup at 2:00 pm this afternoon.

Several players have said publicly that they preferred the back-to-backs, especially from an academic standpoint, because they only had to take three road trips instead of 5-6. (No idea if it's a majority opinion or just a few anecdotes.)

For some reason, unlike most other Ivy athletic websites, the Cornell box score does not include the game's attendance. The only reference to attendance I could find was in the website's recap: ". . . a Newman Nation crowd of better than 3,600." Even being just an estimate, I would guess that's probably the largest crowd for a Cornell basketball game in quite a while, maybe since the 2009-10 season?

Today's Mens games are spread thoughout the day, and carry some surprising point spreads:
12:00 Brown (-4.5) vs Columbia
2:00 Yale (-7.5) vs Cornell
2:00 Harvard (-10.5) vs Dartmouth
6:00 Princeton (-10.5) vs Penn
Apparently home court is expected to provide an advantage.
Thoughts:
- In what should be the game of the day - two undefeated teams in Yale and Cornell - the tournament has made this game relatively meaningless in impact as both make the league tournament, where home court advantage isn't even in play, and when a second league bid isn't realistic. Regardless, Cornell has won 7 in a row since falling at Baylor and Yale has won 8 in a row since losing at Kansas. Making a 17-3 Cornell team a 7.5 point underdog two weeks after it beat Princeton by 15 is bold.
- The most meaningful game (for 4th place of course) pits 2-4 Columbia at 2-4 Brown. Big game for both teams. Brown currently has the upper hand in the race for 4th due to its victory at Harvard, where Columbia has lost. This is a long crowded haul, probably to be decided the final weekend.
- Penn at a sold out Princeton has its own intrigue. Does Slachert return and, if so, can he contribute? Penn (1-5) is digging a hole, but with Slachert and a mostly home schedule the rest of the way, Penn can still drop this game and make a run. Princeton (16-3) will have a chip on its shoulders after dropping 2 in a row. If Princeton gets up on Penn, it could cover the large spread (-10.5).
- Probably the most pressure today is on Harvard. Dartmouth (1-5) comes to Lavietes where Harvard (2-4) must win to realistically set up for the 4th slot. A home loss will be very dangerous, especially with @ Columbia next weekend the day after playing at the racetrack in Ithaca. Lose today and the Crimson could be 2-7 after next weekend with two home losses to teams it has to at least split with. Harvard should prevail, but not by 10.5.
Enjoy! I'll be working all weekend from home and trying to track the games and watch my Crimson on ESPN+ at 2pm. Welcome distractions.

Tier 1 is now 19-0 against Tier 2.
Penn can turn their entire season around with a victory tonight.
Someone is going to pull an upset this season. If Penn starts 1-6 it may need to do that, and would still has each of Yeal, Cornell and then Princeton at home so it doesn't have to be tonight.

So does Columbia, while Harvard plays 5 of 7 on the road
Columbia hosts Dartmouth/Harvard next weekend.
Harvard visits Cornell then Columbia.
Brown at Princeton/Penn.
If Columbia holds court, it could emerge with a 2 game cushion for the 4th spot after Saturday night.
If Harvard can prevail in NYC, it would have the edge over the Lions due to the season sweep.
Yale goes on the road to Penn, Princeton, Cornell and Columbia the next two weekends.
Going to be intense.

Luke Benz has his updated odds for the ILT. Some notables:
Obviously HARV@COL will be the big game for the 4-seed next weekend, but almost equally important is HARV@COR - if H wins in Ithaca, they jump to a 50% favorite to make the tournament.
The Quakers really need to keep the Palestra Curse alive against the Bulldogs this Friday - a loss all but knocks them out.
The Yale-Cornell-Princeton relative odds for the 1-seed are subject to severe change after this weekend.
