The Columbia Women are leading Harvard in Cambridge by a single point at halftime despite the refs rather remarkably taking Columbia's star point guard, Kitty Henderson, out of the game with two fouls in the first minute of the contest. Columbia, Harvard and Princeton are clearly the best three teams in the Ivy League.

55-52 Lions, 5 mins to go. Neither team able to go on a run the entire game.

Just as I said that, Columbia went on a 9-0 run to take a 62-52 lead and really wasn’t threatened after that as Collins sank her FTs at the end to seal a 71-63 victory.
Abbey was held in check, scoring only 10 on 3/10 shooting, but it was truly a team effort today as Collins, Rafiu, Page, Stephens, Weiss, and the Henderson sisters all played well.
But especially Rafiu (3 blocks, 7 reb, 12 points) and Stephens (11 points, 6 reb, no TOs… she rarely makes a poor decision with the ball, so solid).

And, finally, the Columbia Women BB Team goes on the necessary run in the final few minutes of the game to take down a very good Harvard squad by a 71-63 score in Cambridge this afternoon. Great coaching at the end by Coach G as she kept Harvard on the ropes by subbing Cecilia Collins in and out at just the right time and otherwise making all the right coaching calls.

Hey Pete, our posts crossed with one another, but I agree with you completely. Today was indeed a "team effort. All six of the ladies you mentioned have improved dramatically under Coach G's guidance this year.

I would agree, except for FLiss, who didn't score at all.
It was nonetheless quite a gutsy win. The two most notable facts out of it are that Collins is really becoming a star, averaging 15.7 ppg in the IL. She's reliable, and she is clutch and 2) we have found ourselves a center in Raifu who had a career high 12 pts + 3 blocked shots and 8 rebounds. This is especially important for next Saturday, when we will need someone to contend with Elie Mitchell.

Susie Raifu has improved dramatically this season and has become a force for the Lions on both offense and defense. I like your statement that "...we have found ourselves a center in Raifu..."

I believe Noa’s last game was at Jadwin… not sure what happened. I don’t think Mary Lobon is on the team either… haven’t seen her on the bench in a few weeks.
Agreed about Rafiu… she looks like a completely different player this year and seems to be getting better each week. I had no expectations for Nicole Stephens coming into this season, but she does so many of the little things that helps a team win… love her game.

Lions putting it all together at just the right time. I expect a totally different game Saturday than we saw at Jadwin. Hope the outcome is the same but it will probably come down to a 1 possession contest at the end. A Lion win will not be a surprise to anyone.

I agree with the Toothless Tiger. Columbia-Princeton Game II will probably come down to the last possession--CMG ("cant miss game") for Ivy League Women Basketball Fans.

That's better than I expected. There are a couple of things in our favor--the team's development, especially Raifu, St.Rose's recent slump, and of course, the HCA. But Princeton is still Princeton, and has beaten the other IL teams by substantially more than we have (for example, we beat Harvard at Harvard by 8, they beat Harvard by 23). Let's just hope this is the game in which Columbia puts it all together.

Although the game on March 16 will likely be the only game we remember in 10 years, this Saturday’s match up is significant for a couple reasons:
-A Princeton win likely propels the Tigers to a perfect 14-0 regular season.
- A Columbia win gives the Lions a chance to share the title (assuming both finish 13-1).
Should be an electric atmosphere in Levien on Saturday.

It took me a few moments to realize that "HCA" was the abbreviation for Home Court Advantage. Sorry for delayed reaction since I used the even less common "CMG." However, the very fact that fans like us are dropping abbreviations for the game on Saturday is an indication of how much excitement has been generated well in advance of Saturday's game by the two teams. Bravo to both Columbia and Princeton

Indeed, the atmosphere in Levien for the last several years has been electric for Women's Basketball, but it is disappointing that the Columbia student body hasn't really been very vocal, Maybe it is unrealistic to expect students who read the boring sports hating New York Times to evolve overnight into Duke style "Cameron Crazies." Yet, wouldn't it be wonderful if some students became authentic "Levien Loonies" this weekend.

Vasali Cholopoulov, a 5'10 point guard for the Greek 16 and under national team, has committed to Columbia. Her commitment is for 2025. Columbia has two known commitments for 2024--Nasi Simmons and a 6'1" player from Spain named Sanchez

Anyone know how good VC is? May we assume that Griffith saw something before any other American coach and just offered her very early?
We do need to bolster the 2024 cohort. Simmons is supposed to be good, but the class seems thin.

On my second research effort, I answered my own question. VC was the leading scorer on the Greek under 16 team, averaging 16 pts, 6 RBS, and 2.7 assists last August in the European tournament.Greece finished 13th, but it sounds as if VC has real potential and is exactly the sort of player who could develop a lot under Griffith's tutelage.

Good find cc66! VC's numbers are impressive and she is certainly the sort of player who is likely to thrive under Coach Griffith's tutelage. Incidentally, while I am not of Greek heritage, I once had the honor of being invited to have lunch in Washington, D.C. by Columbia Football Hall of Famer, Gene Rossides. Mr. Rossides was extremely proud of his Greek heritage. He certainly would have delighted by the news that a star woman athlete will be coming to Columbia.

Never would have guessed that I’d become such a big fan of women’s b-ball. But, the games are fun to watch and well-played. It’s gotten to the point that I am as interested in the women as the men. Both C and P have standout coaches. Back to the game.

67-65 Columbia in front of a packed house!
Hsu with 26. We led by 11 late, but after Princeton made a 12-2 run, we held on for the victory--ending Princeton's winning streak of 24 games in the IL.

Hsu outplayed Chen this time. After it looked like we had the game in hand with about 5 minutes to go and a 10 point lead we turned cold, Princeton mounted a run, and we held on for dear life when Chen missed what would have been the tying shot. All in all, a game for the ages.

Great outcome for Columbia WBB Fans, but I have to express my annoyance watching the game on ESPN+ with Lance Medow's annoying non-stop cliches and the amateurish boring commercials including the one for New York Hospital which was repeated five or six times. I happen to like Medow, who knows his stuff, but the cliches are too much. And then there is the Herman Wouk ad which is probably fifteen + years old.

Hear ya... I often rewind to re-watch an exciting play and/or to see if the ref got the call right... I get the added benefit of fast-forwarding through the commercials.
