Close but one player short. A few more makes could have led to a huge upset.

We need another big man who can score. somebody with the athleticism of Josh and the size of Jake.

Exactly!

Unfortunately, players like that are pretty rare, and Columbia hasn't had one in a long, long time...

Freshman Arop Arop looked very talented against Fairleigh-Dickinson and then we barely saw him after that. He's a skilled 6'10" player but apparently too light at 180 lbs to play inside the paint. I am unaware if the coaching staff ever gave an explanation. Freshman forward Richard Nweke missed the entire season due to injury. The third freshman, a backcourt guard from Australia did not see much action. Altogether Columbia's recruiting class scored about ten points in total this season.

What do you foresee for Arop Arop?

What position should he play?

Seems somewhat inappropriate for us and others to speculate publicly at this time on this young man's basketball future without having received any information whatsoever from the coaching staff or anyone else regarding what is going on with him. Hopefully, the only reason he hasn't seen any meaningful playing time thus far at Columbia has to do with his weight and that problem can be corrected in the off-season with the help of qualified medical personel.

I certainly meant no harm to Arop.My question was solely directed at the issue of what we envision for someone who is tall but very thin.I assume that if he hits the weight room in the off-season, he could play forward next year. So I was merely opening up the question of whether my projection is correct.

I know you meant no harm to Arop, but I am very uncomfortable discussing the young man future on a public this forum without knowing the reason(s) why he played so little this season. I am reluctant to assume that it was due to his weight without confirmation from the coaching staff. Surely everyone knew his approximate weight during his recruitment

It seems apparent that Arop was drafted as a project. I don’t see him as a contributor until his junior year. He looks skilled but is just not strong enough at this point.

We usually agree on most everything my friend, but I doubt that Columbia or any other school drafted Arop "as a project" who would be unavailable to contribute until his junior year because of his lack of strength. According to his Columbia roster profile, Arop was recruited by numerous D-1 schools including Vanderbilt, Miami, Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Miami. At the time of his recruitment last year he was attending Hotchkiss, which is one of the best prep schools. He was fifth year senior at Hotchkiss after being successful in a high school in Texas. It's difficult to imagine that if he had a strength problem that it was overlooked by all the great schools that were recruiting him. I hope things work out in every way for this outstanding young man. Maybe someone with actual knowledge of what's going on will provide clarification.

Good point, but that doesn’t mean that other schools didn’t also view him as a 2 year project. If he were ready to play, I assume that Engles would play him. Guys fall in and out of favor with coaching staffs all the time—witness Stankard going from a rotation player to the bench, witness the first year PG going from limited minutes to the end of the bench, witness Tavroff’s shrinking minutes. I can only assume that Aron has not yet demonstrated in practice that he is ready for prime time.
