First round opponent is West By God Virginia. Get by them, and we get to see Caitlin Clark. Practice the Logo 3 defense.

Revenge game for the 2016 first round (oddly like Kentucky was revenge for 2019).
WVU's signature trait seems to be ball pressure - #2 in the country in steal rate and forced turnover rate. Probably bodes well given our low turnover rate and Kaitlyn on the ball, but not sure how well our depth of ballhandlers will hold up against a serious press.
Otherwise they seem probably a bit above average for an 8-9 opponent - no big wins besides Oklahoma and maybe Iowa State, both at home, but they played the other top B12 teams close down the stretch.

Not only would we (hypothetically) play Iowa in Iowa, but there are no tickets available for Princeton fans.

No tickets for Princeton fans? If true, that's outrageous. But maybe Chris Littlefield, Carlie's father, can pull some strings and score a few? If by some miracle we beat WVU (which will be a tough order), the Committee has given us the fun (?) opportunity to avenge the one, single defeat the great 2019-20 team suffered, losing in overtime to Iowa in Iowa City (though it wouldn't have gone to OT but for Julia Cunningham's last second heave from about mid-court). Of course, that was before Caitlin Clark arrived at Iowa. Caitlin vs. Kaitlyn, anybody?

Caitlin vs. Kaitlyn.
Yeah, as good as Kaitlyn is, unfortunately we lose that one which will be the difference no matter what anyone else does. Let's just hope we can get to that point as a first-round win three years in a row would be fantastic.

Getting an 8 or 9 seed sucks, because if you win your first game, you have to play a #1 seed on its home court. In my view, Columbia theoretically has an easier path to the Sweet Sixteen, because their two games would be against a #5, then a #4. Victories against such teams would seem statistically more likely than against a #1 seed like Iowa.

Columbia would have to play 3 games to reach the Sweet 16 as their game against Vandy comes first.

Understood that Columbia's situation is more difficult having to play in, but my point was that at least they don't have to face a #1 seed to get past the first weekend.

If you're a fairly strong team and get under seeded, being a 12 is a pretty good place to be. If you win, the confidence you get from beating a 5 seed could be immense and make the prospect of beating a 4 seed not so daunting. I think Princeton proved that the last two years giving a 3 and a 2 a run for their money. Had they played a 4 or 5 seed in round two there's a good chance they might have won. But the toughest part is still having to play the higher seed on their home court.

That's what the e-mail from Princeton Athletic Dept. stated.

Right, but they do have to play one extra game which reduces their chances by roughly an additional 50% depending on which team is favored.

My understanding from the cryptic note is that all seats go to season ticket holders at Iowa, and it is 100% sold out to them. So by extrapolation, equally true for WVU.

I agree. Within our same bracket, lower seeds have a better path to the sweet sixteen.

I know nothing about Iowa ticket policy or NCAA ticket policy, but this is not just an Iowa home game. Iowa is hosting an NCAA event, with two teams (Princeton and WVU) that have nothing to do with Iowa (at least in the Saturday game). So they're saying that Iowa season ticketholders are first in line to watch WVU play Princeton? That doesn't sound right.

If they're smart, they'll schedule the Iowa game first. Then you'll have the whole arena to yourselves for the second game.

The only team we've played even in the top 100 of steal rate was Seton Hall (51st) - that didn't go well with a 25% turnover rate, although at least most of those were dead-ball turnovers and of course we pulled out the game. That wasn't the same pressure WVU will bring though.
I'm not worried about the pressure disrupting our offense because our offense has no flow anyway - Kaitlyn and Madison can score in iso and we're good at getting points off offensive rebounds or broken plays. It's all about the turnovers for me - we're not going to win a shootout, so we can't afford to give up easy fast-break points.
