They may be bringing in fewer freshmen. So the D1 P6 builds their rosters through transfers, and more of the incoming freshmen go to mids. No idea if that is empirically true, but it would explain who’s the numbers add up.

I cld write a book on fsu. To see extent understanding their plight was the catalyst to understanding the whole mosaic reshaping college sports.
Context- I grew up in Tally, my dad played football there and was a lifetime golden chief and through the execution of his will we are involved in the battles end, a top 5 NIL org which funds the football program.
I do know two Dartmouth and one Harvard kid who have grad transferred to fsu for football in last 3 yrs. They recruited 3 yale kids who opted for south Carolina and Tenn instead.

On samson-

I am hopeful you are correct.

He only went to Yale to honor his late father who as a Nigerian immigrant became a compu sci prof at a small Texas school.

Samson blew up late as a recruit-everyone who saw him the summer bf his senior year wanted him-texas Baylor tcu houston etc.
But he went to yale bc he was sold on the education and his father's wishes.
His primary recruiter is now at BU. I think he will blow up and wld be a Fool not to consider the money.
The thing in Yale's favor- his late father's vision and he is an old school 5 not a wolf type in an era where schools can buy a 24 yr old to do what he does well.

But I think he will be better than wolf on multiple fronts. He is the biggest most athletic kid at the 5 that Yale has had since Chris dudley

Interesting perspective. Are the collectives allowed to contact a player at another school before he even expresses interest in transferring???

I find it hard to believe that players aren’t being contacted by other schools (or boosters) before entering the portal. Would we call this “recruiting?”

I also wonder about the conversations players have with their existing coaches. Did the 4 Princeton players who jumped meet with Mitch beforehand to ask him where they stood with him next year? Puts a different spin on Mitch’s comment after the season ending loss that he’d be talking with the players about goals for next year.

By the way, Duke has now lost 7 players to the portal.

its as dirty as you can imagine. there are no rules! we all know how dirty the recruiting game was when there are rules.

as for football vs basketball... the case study that foreshadowed portal chaos started in football. this is where the revenue is primarily where the collectives were birthed first and obviously it is driving conference realignment.

so ignoring machinations within the football apparatus would be like investing in retail stocks but not understanding amazons disruptive business model

For what it's worth, I've heard that Danny Wolf grew up a huge Michigan fan, and that he was considering walking on there as a freshman vs. going to Yale. So it's kind of hard to blame him for wanting to go there now that they want him as a centerpiece (plus it might help allay some of the the-sky-is-falling concerns a bit).

Thanks.

He is going in with a new head coach and coaching staff, but I assume he is comfortable with that.

Does anyone else seeing this thread keep thinking it's a helluva title for a novel?

This can’t help Wolf’s playing time next year: Florida Atlantic big follows coach to Michigan. https://x.com/wojespn/status/178494 3775904833792?s...

I was thinking a song parody.

And the Wolf’s in the portal Yale, yes it's true
Big man gonna wear maize and blue
When you coming home, Dan, he don’t know when
But he’ll dunk you on your head, yeah
You know he’ll have a good time then…

my guess is you have to put danny at the 4 anyway given how limited his post game is
how do you defend the spread with 2 7 footers on the floor at the same yime is a ?

I could see how that might be a serious matchup problem, even for Big 10 teams. Let's wait to see who ends up running the point for that team, though.

Obviously those two would create matchup problems on the offensive end. Most college coaches are more worried about who the two seven footers are gonna defend on the other end. It's not a zero sum game. You can't score 80 and give up 90.

Princeton was able to handle two 7 footers (well, 6'11 and 7) in the NCAA tournament when they played Arizona.
