Monday at 5pm.

I know nothing about Marist basketball - although I do recall playing in a NYS High School basketball postseason tournament on their court. Sort of a compressed wrestling mat surface back then that slowed down the dribble and made my team's running oriented offense incredibly sloppy.

Anyway, with four DI road games after this one, Monday is likely our only chance at having a winning record at a point during this season. Oh, and what happened to our games vs MIT and Tufts this year?

Other threads are predicting their starting lineups. So, I'm thinking:
Batties
Nelson
Pigge
Lesmond

After that, I guess maybe Hinton or Ace Nestaski, depending on the size of the opponent.

Of course, I'm also thinking of our lineup starting for other schools tomorrow:
Mack
Okpara
Ajogbor
Silverstein
Simon (year off, maybe in the stands)

Sorry, my happy place isn't so this year, but I'll probably tune in at 5pm, I think.

Last year I was cautiously optimistic going into the season. I thought Mack was going to surprise people, Okpara would take a step forward, and Lesmond would give us the floor spacing we'd been missing. That worked out pretty well during the nonconference, at least until Ajogbor got hurt and Mack got sick. From that point on, though, our shooting (and Mack's in particular) went cold, and we underachieved our talent for the rest of the season.

This year, I don't see any reason for optimism. I don't think we have anyone who will be able to reliably create their own shot. Nelson is only a year removed from tearing his Achilles, so he'll probably have a lot less explosiveness; Batties didn't show a ton of one-on-one ability last year; that isn't Pigge's game either; we might be in store for a lot of contested Lesmond jumpers, which might work a couple of games (he was a big-time recruit coming out of high school for a reason), but isn't a recipe for long-term success.

Our best hope might be if Robert Hinton—a top 100 recruit—is ready to take on those shot creation responsibilities from Day One. That's hard to know with any first year, but especially one like him who came from such a loaded high school team that he didn't have to do a ton of it before. Even then, though, the worry would be if he's so successful that he makes himself a transfer portal target (I'd be worried about Stanford again).

I do like our freshmen class. Hunt, Dowdell, and Barbour all profile as the kind of plus shooters that we've been missing the last couple of years. They all would have been ideal to put around a creator like Mack, but alas. So how ready will they be to take on bigger roles right now? I have no idea.

Sadly, I think our number one goal for this season is to develop our young guys without losing any of them to the transfer portal. It's a fine line. That alone would constitute a successful season, until Harrington shows up next year.

Lesmond in a boot. Freshmen looking pretty good so far. We’ll need them to be.

Luca hurt an ankle. Pigge got hit in the face. Nelson with two fouls. Basically down to just the freshmen now.

Hinton has been as good as we reasonably could have hoped. The other first years have knocked down a couple of threes and looked like real contributors. Luca was great early on before he hurt his ankle but at least he came back.

Ball has been moving well at least.

Great start to the season, way better than I hoped.

Hinton is going to be Ivy ROY. He’s got a beautiful spin and then half spin counter. Very savvy getting to the rim, with the size, strength, and athleticism to finish. Likes the midrange more than three, teams might adjust and play him more to that in the future, but he looked better than we could have hoped tonight.

Hunt might come in second for ROY. He’s got the deep stroke, but also the hops to impact the game in other ways, especially on defense and the boards. He’s a great find. Barbour looks like a solid rotation piece out of the gates, and Dowdell will have his moments getting hot from three.

Nelson, Pigge, and Ace-Nasteski all had nice moments as well. Hopefully we get Lesmond back in the not too distant future. In any case, we moved the ball pretty well tonight, at least until the last four minutes when we were killing clock. No matter the opponent, shooting 63% as a team is something to feel very good about.

With Nana’s injury, the race for fourth is wide open. If we can play like this consistently, we’ll have a shot.

Note I sent to a buddy at halftime:

“I still think we will take our lumps this season but I like what we’ve done with the team. We finally aren’t playing early 90s ACC basketball where we are dependent on a center and point guard. We look like a young, small Princeton or Cornell.”

We will see how that holds.

Agreed. Where will he be next year?

Certainly a nice effort. I don’t think Marist is very good though. We don’t have a post-up center so we can play inside out. We also aren’t very fast so we can’t run. We shot ridiculously well, unsustainably so. We have an extremely weak OOC schedule, so maybe we win a few more. Hinton was enjoyable
