Proving that they were capable of topping even the last debacle, the Geniuses at the WKCR Board of Directors decided to pull tonight's Columbia/Hofstra game from the airwaves roughly 30 minutes ago, after the broadcasters had arrived at the Hofstra Arena.
The game was only to be heard on WKCR's MP3 stream, to allow listeners to choose between the ongoing Bach Festival (Real Audio stream or over the air) and tonight's basketball game (MP3). Now, Bach Fest will be heard over the MP3 Stream as well, meaning those of us dying to hear Columbia/Hofstra are screwed.
After watching Coach Jones on ESPN's Cold Pizza yesterday morning and reading ESPN.com's Andy Katz's column on the game yesterday afternoon, I'm devastated that I have no way of hearing my Lions in their biggest game in years.
To express you dissatisfaction with this idiotic decision, you can call WKCR at 212-854-9920 or the Fundraiser Hotline at 212-851-2699. I, for one, will not be donating to the station as long as these clowns are running the show.

Sad and pathetic... 12-22-04 11:05 PM - Post#1511
In response to CULions82
The latest turn of events just shows how completely sad and pathetic things are at the heights. I know that KCR is going to claim that they were unable to get a telecom connection from Hofstra to their broadcast center. That may or may not be true...what I can guarantee is that if they had really wanted to do this game it would have gone on the stream (or on the air).
You wonder when CU is ever going to outgrow their memories of the 1960's and establish the notion that the university has an ongoing mission and responsibility that outlives and sometimes overrides the interests/opinions of students that are there at any one time.
BTW, I like Bach...but, not continuously for three days....

It's on http://www.hofstra.edu/CampusL/WRHU/wrhu_stream.cfm. Bad first half for the Lions: down 38-21, shooting 19%. Hofstra making around 50%.

I called 212-854-9920 and someone said the Board decided to keep the Bach program on MP3.

Furstenberg, WKCR, who else? 12-23-04 12:34 AM - Post#1514

This is the environment that Ivy athletics operates under. Unless the presidents show any gumption, this will continue for a long time.

And people used to wonder why I insinuated on the ivybasketball.com board that Columbia had a bigger cultural disadvantage than anywhere else....
Everyone said, let the team run-and-gun and win a little, and they would get support... um, well...

Spoke to the incoming Program Director 12-23-04 01:12 AM - Post#1516
In response to CULions82
He is a tool. He claimed that the "momentum" of the broadcast was too important to pull. Of course, he couldn't explain why there was no advance notice of this decision, or why the announcers were allowed to leave for Long Island... or why the "resolution" of the broadcasts as listed on the website is written so sarcastically...
This was an intentional revenge shot at the athletic program and all alumni who care about Columbia sports. Obviously the board wasn't scared enough by Columbians contacting high level personnel last month.
Columbians who care should call administrators tomorrow to find out who allowed this to happen.

92, let's not get into revisionist history (I know it's a CU specialty)...the teams under Hill were boring, ugly to watch and didn't win very often. With that as a foundation there was no way to build any support or momentum.
All of that had nothing to do with KCR and Bach! There are elements within the so-called 'community' at the heights that live in a fantasy land and do what they want. The university has allowed this to go on (and not just at KCR) for DECADES!
BTW, if you think that KCR is ideologically driven, narrow minded and inflexible, you should sit in on a few faculty meetings....truly scary.

Withold Your Donations!!! 12-23-04 07:03 AM - Post#1519
In response to CULions82
It is absolutely unacceptable that any WKCR Board feels they can get away with this. What's worse is that members of the new incoming Board were apparently involved in this stupid decision.
The Internetter is right. We should write more e-mails. But now we must step up our language.
All WKCR listeners should write to Board@wkcr.org and announce they will withold donations until the Board apologizes for its despicable actions. Otherwise, don't expect to see any money until the 2006 Board is elected.
I also recommend writing to Dean Colombo at cc69@columbia.edu, and let him know your sentiments. Tell him to keep his station in order, and make sure it is acting FOR the undergraduate community, not for a bizarre, stubborn, and unreasonable subset of it.
