Many positives. CU didn't play a great game, Preston was out for stretches with foul problems, Boswell only scored a few, but CU won anyway. Loscalzo was the man: played very good D, scored 19 with 5 assists and 5 rebounds with only 1 or 2 TO's. Simply amazing. Only shortcoming was his free throw shooting--he's a very good free throw shooter, but tnight only shot 3 of 7. In addition to playing well at the Garden, CU also got a huge amount of positive publicity over the last 3 days, Jones was interviewed several times, as were Loscalzo, Preston and others. Of note, both Baumann and Sweet were in uniform, but did not play. This obviously means they're on their way back. Lastly, in the finals, NCState got crushed by St. Johns. NCS shot 20%! All of those shots it made against CU, it missed tonight.

Loscalzo hit six of seven shots, including 4 of 5 threes. He's getting there!

Hill started again, getting 6 RBs, 2 assists, but only one point.

St. John's beat N.C. State big time in the championship game, 63-45. Wow.

Notes from the Garden:

Very big positive aside from Loscalzo's breakout performance, was DK finding his stroke from long distance, which has been on and off this season. Dragutin also had an emphatic block in the 2nd half.

From a team perspective it is very heartening to see that the Lions were able to win, depite shooting only 40%. Obviously the Hofstra game was a terrible anomaly, but the Lions will need to hold on some nights when the shots aren't falling. Which leads to.... Free Throws. Brett could have broken 20, if he was able to to better than the 3-7 from the line that he converted. As a team, 13-22 FT will not get it done during the Ivy season. At least Matt Preston (8-10) was able to shake some of his FT woes last night... but that means that the the rest of the team only shot 5-12 from the line...

Gerard Barrett contributed more in these two games than he had all year. Ben Nwachukwu's 4 points came on two very nice post moves. Columbia Band did not show, at least they were there Tuesday. Columbia Cheerleaders Did Not Show either game. There was a much smaller turnout for Canisius/Columbia than NCSU/Columbia, although the locals did cheer for the light blue... Impossible to find Columbians wearing team colors at all. Lots of Red for the Pack and Johnnies.

This was a very encouraging game for the Light Blue. It would have been easy to come out totally flat after the big effort against the Pack. Lions won despite not hitting on all cylinders. Turnout was sparse, but consolation games usually are.

It was great to see CU play in the Garden again. It could take years and might never happen...but, it sure would be fun to imagine CU playing the Johnnies, SHU, MC, etc., in some doubleheaders at the Garden with a real crowd there to watch (yeah, I know that's a retro fantasy that won't happen...still...).
