I am not one to blame the coaching staff for a loss, or give the coaching staff credit for a win, however, getting your best shooter and leading scorer 2 shots from the field is inexcusable. Dunphy and the coaching staff needed to make some adjustments at halftime and have one of the big men set a screen for Begley. It is great that we hung in there on the road with a Big East team after a long break, but a few better decisions by the coaches would have made a big difference in this game. Yes, Begley handles the ball a lot with this team, as Oz and Ibby are not "true" point guards, but he is also your best shooter...get him some looks. It really isn't that difficult a concept, set a hard screen on Begley's man, and then either he will be open or the screener will be open if they switch on the screen, which they didn't even do last night. Inexcusable to have him get only 2 shots.

Re: 2 Shots and NO SCREENS for Begley - Inexcusable 01-01-05 07:49 PM - Post#1724
In response to
(1) They attempted to set lots of picks on Begley's defender. Many of them were ineffective, because of various combinations of the following -- our pick was set poorly (many examples of this), the defender was too quick for the picking player and avoided the pick, Begley is not quick enough with the ball (or off the ball for that matter) to get open more than just briefly.
(2) Even when Begley did get open briefly, the Penn player with the ball always had a quicker or at least longer defender in his face, obscuring the passing lanes.
(3) Getting Begley the ball on the move is not going to produce much, as he is not a good shooter on the move. He needs to set himself to be effective or receive the pass and to up with it immediately from a solid stance. Quick, athletic defenders are always going to be able to stop him.
The only way we were going to win that game was for other players to step up and have big offensive games. Ibby did, to some extent, although he could have done more. Ryan P tried, and was moderatly effective. Oz helped a bit.
If we avoid the 4-5 horrible turnovers (passes to no one) and shoot a decent percentage from the foul line, we have a shot at winning that game.
