Saw the debut of the JTIII Hoyas. They struggled against Temple's zone and Temple, especially Mardy Collins, shot the ball very well. Georgetown was about what I expected. Temple was better. Hoyas had no one who could guard Collins, a big guard who can create his own shots. Temple also had good size inside. Wayne Marshall had some nice low post moves.
JTIII played 10 players, but the main 8 are 2 seniors, 2 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 3 freshmen. He started two freshmen, pf Jeff Green and walk-on pg Jon Wallace, with juniors Brandon Bowman and Ashanti Cook and senior Darrel Owens. 7'2" freshman center Roy Hibbert had big minutes and scored 12 points. A fourth freshman, guard Tyler Crawford, got a shot in the 2nd half to try to guard Collins. These guys will develop, but Temple was a tough matchup to start off the season. From 27-25 Temple, the Owls had an 11-point flurry to break the game open, including a banked three at the 1st half buzzer. Georgetown did not have great shooters to break the zone. With so many freshmen and the others all new to the system, I think Georgetown will be much better against man to man than a good zone. Bowman, the top returning player, scored 12 but struggled a bit. He is not a spot up shooter but that is all Temple gave him. He really wanted to slash to the lane or drive the baseline, but it wasn't there. As could be expected, the ball movement and decisions were not quite quick enough against a good zone team such as Temple.
