Sun 02/25/07 @ Canisius: Victory before the MAAC tourney! W; 20-10, 12-6.

A twenty win season and 12-6 in the MAAC (tie for second or maybe third place) is a very successful season and will likely be the end of Jimmy @ Loyola. In four years, Loyola will have gone from basement to postseason NIT worthy and an NCAA contender. And next season's roster (07-08) is even more talented. Yes this is optimistic but can you blame a Loyola fan?

What are your thoughts?

If they win 20 games we ought to erect a statue of Jimmy out front. I do think you are being overly optimistic, but not totally out of the question. I think you are underestimating the potential hit we will take early not having our best player on the court. Yes, our best player. Brown is likely to lead the team in scoring, but I think if Israel plays to his potential he will be the star on this team.

That said I hope you are correct that we beat St. John’s without Israel, but I doubt it. I haven’t really gone through game by game but I see us coming in at about 17 wins if all goes well. The bottom line is that while Jimmy is improving as a coach, he is still learning to be a head coach. Last year we lost some games we should have/could have won. I think we are a better team this year, but I am not yet ready to think we are good enough and well enough coached to avoid a couple of those hiccups. I would certainly take 17 wins and 10 in the MAAC, which I think is the goal for this year. If we come in below that without very significant injuries I will be very disappointed.

I would also bet against this being Jimmy’s last year. I don’t think we will make the tournament, which is what is needed to really get on the big-time radar. And I don’t think Jimmy is going to be looking for a slight step up. I think he is at Loyola until he gets a real BCS-style offer. As you say next year should be better than this year, so why take a small jump this year? The big time schools want to see an NCAA tournament on the resume to appease their boosters, and Jimmy wants the big time. If he gets near 20 wins this year and makes the tournament next year his lottery ticket is punched. I think that is his plan, barring any really surprising offer after this year.
Jesus loves me.
I don't give a f--- what the rest of you think.

Anthony - I wish you could show more enthusiasm for the upcomming season. Where's the prediction for the post-season? Slacker.

Do you know for a fact there is a consolation game in the Coaches vs Cancer tourney at MSG?

I wonder if - excuse me - when we advance to MSG if we can postpone the UMBC game.

Lou - St. John's is in a bad way. We could not have caught a bigger break. We can take them without Isreal.

Acknowledged. But it is still beating a Big East team on their home floor. I certainly think we CAN win, and I hope we do. But if you give me even money and no points I have a hard time betting us to win. I will gladly eat crow if I am wrong.

There is a consolation game at Alumni Hall the next day, 11/11, we shouldn't be playing in that, and there is a consolation game at MSG as well, which would be a great accomplishment to play in that game. SJU has been down for a few years, but they improved in the second half of last season. I don't know if any of you watch the Johnnies, but Roberts has this team going in the right direction. They beat Louisville and Pitt last year. Beating them, especially at Alumni Hall, which was once one of the most feared home courts in the Big East, would be extremely tough, I don't care how down the Johnnies are. However, they do seem to drop games early in the season that they should win, so hopefully we get them at the right time. If we make it to that second game SJU will be favored by at least 15 points.
