An article in the sports section of the Sunday NY Times, page 5,
on Bucknell, titled "Part of the Old Guard Helps Bucknell Gain New
Status" has the following quote from John Hardt, the athletic director, regarding scholarships, a new gym and recreational
facility:

"The caliber of student-athlete it has allowed us to recruit is
higher, no doubt about it," Hardt said. "But what people don't necessarily see is that they have a higher academic profile, too. Now we can go head-to-head with highly selective schools, especially in the Ivy League."

In a later paragraph, Pat Flannery, the coach, said, "We used to
go into homes and when the deal was done, we had to say, "Now you have to pay $38,000." Flannery said, approximating Bucknell's' annual cost for students. "It was usually a deal breaker."
