1. GW Boon was one of twelve players selected by a committee of coaches to play for Alabama in the annual Alabama-Mississippi game. This selection essentially means that he is viewed as one of the top twelve seniors in Alabama, which is a good hoops state. Four of the others selected already have free rides to SEC schools (two Alabama, one Auburn, and one Vanderbilt) and include two players rated four stars by Scout (Rico Pickett and Justin Knox) and one three star player. Boon, btw, beat out seven players who have a two star rating but were not taken.

2. Darryl Shazier was named a first-team All Eastern Region pick in Virginia. This is a much broader area than just the Peninsula District. Only two players of the eleven on the first two teams are from the Peninsula District, and counting honorable mentions, there are three out of 19. Shazier's scoring average declined a bit this year due to Menchville adding a strong inside scorer but apparently his all-around play was still recognized.

--------------------------------------------------------

"Kecoughtan's Ricardo Ratcliffe and Menchville's Darryl Shazier were selected by Eastern Region coaches to the all-regional team.

Ratcliffe, a junior, led the Peninsula District in scoring with a 25.6 average. Shazier, who will play for Bucknell next year, averaged 14.8 for Menchville's regional semifinal team.

Booker T. Washington's Myles Holley was named player of the year by the coaches. Also on the first team were Andre Jones of Nansemond River, Richard Barbee of Salem and Darius James of Tallwood.

Second team -- Corey Law, Deep Creek; Austin Kenon, First Colonial; Jaquon Parker, King's Fork; Chris McEachin, Norview; Mark Brown, Nansemond River.

Honorable mention -- Denzel Bowles, Kempsville; Voyland Cooke, Lakeland; Mike Lyons, Woodside; Lamonte Theus, Norcom; Calvin Johnson, Lake Taylor; Deshaune Green, Norcom; Randall Dunn, Ocean Lakes; Jamar Wertz, King's Fork. "

I got a question about G.W. Boon (a stupid one at that, probably with a very simple answer). I can't find Boon anywhere on scout.com nor a commitment from him, even though I do see O'Brien and Shazier. Is there a better recruiting site to go to or am I just missing something here? Thanks guys.

All of the recruiting sites are deeply flawed. Many of their rankings are based on very limited viewing of the players and they have never even seen some of the players they have rated. A ranking may be based on what another coach told them, the level of schools that are recruiting a player, and partially on what shoe company sponsors the player's AAU team. (Yes, the last statement is absolutely true.)

In addition to Scout, other recruiting services include Rivals, Hoopscoop, and a few others. Boon has never shown up on Scout, possibly because his offensive game developed late. That may well have been a function of being the only junior starter on his H.S. team last year, playing with four seniors who are now playing in college, and thus getting a limited number of shots. It also was probably a function of playing with several strong scorers in AAU and being the guy who always guarded the other team's star. These scouting services' rankings basically end once seniors are done with fall AAU, so all of Boon's good play in H.S. this winter has not affected his ranking.

I know Boon does get a good ranking from HoopScoop and he got two stars from Rivals (again not adjusted for his play this winter). Rivals does show him as having signed a LOI with the Bison: http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=52384

Thanks 137, somehow I knew you would have the answer. One more stupid question: what does LOI stand for? Seen it a couple times but can't figure it out.

I'll chip in with this answer, 0329.

LOI = Letter Of Intent. This is the "commitment" you were asking about earlier.

Go Bison!

Letter of Intent. It is the scholarship "contract" signed by a player (and his/her parents) and a D1 college during one of the NCAA-specified signing periods. It is normally binding although the player must get through admissions for the contract to be effective.

Unfortunately unethical coaches can very occasionally pressure a player to agree to void the LOI. This is what happened to Bucknell's Amanda Brown, who signed with Oklahoma State originally. Then their coach was fired and the new coach had a couple of players (JUCO's?) he wanted to bring in but no scholarships available. So he unethically told Brown that he couldn't take away her scholarship but he could and would refuse to allow her to play or even practice with the team. Since she was going to OSU because she wanted to play basketball (surely not for their academics), she ended up deciding to go elsewhere and ended up in Lewisburg.

It's good news about ourrecruits, particularly Boon. This recruiting class better be the nuts considering our Kansas and Arkansas wins.

GW first team all-state 6A. have to look carefully due to failure to split boys 6A from the Girls Super 5.

There is some serious talent on the Alabama all-state teams, especially the 6A team that Boon is on. Looking at that five-man group:

1. Boon
2. Keegan Bell - 3 star player, committed to Vanderbilt.
3. Courtney Fortson - POY in Alabama for all six groups, unsigned but interest in Alabama, Cinci, Kansas, Texas A&M. 3 stars from Rivals. Made All-group "Super 5" team for the whole state.
4. Christopher Blake - 3 stars from Rivals, unsigned but interest from Florida State. Made All-group "Super 5" team for the whole state.
5. Nick Williams - junior - 4 star player per Scout; already committed to Marquette.

In the other groups, you can also find Rico Pickett (4 stars - committed to Alabama), Frank Sullivan ( 4 stars, ranked #109 in US among juniors, made "Super 5", being recruited by Florida, Kentucky, etc), and JaMychal Green (5 star junior, being recruited by Florida, Kentucky, etc).

I'm seriously excited about next year's freshmen. Boon has been getting props all season and this just puts the icing on the cake.

After three years of real success (yes, I'll count this year) it's nice to continue to have something to look forward to in the future ;o)

A brief bio of one of GW Boon's teammates on the Alabama all-star team:

Keegan Bell - Scout's #23 ranked PG in nation, Rival's #27 PG; offered by LSU, Georgia, Missouri, Illinois, Vanderbilt, Alabama, Auburn, etc.; signed by Vanderbilt: second-team 6A All-State two years ago as a soph; also second-team last year as a junior; first-team 6A all-state as a senior.

Why the bio on Bell?

He was just named the Super All-Metro boys Player of the Year for the Huntsville/Northern Alabama area, and with his resume it's not surprising. What is interesting, however, is that according to the article (see below), Bell "edged another All-State pick and Alabama All-Star, G.W. Boon of Sparkman, for the award."

I think that's a tribute to Boon that a player of Bell's caliber, recruited by a large number of big-time programs and ranked #23 nationally at PG, can only "edge" him out for the POY for the region.

Excerpt from the article:

"Meanwhile, Hazel Green point guard Keegan Bell had wanted to take the Trojans toward a state title this season. He didn't get his wish. Hazel Green won 25 games in the only season Bell played at the school after transferring from Bob Jones, but were upset by Austin in the sub-state round.

But like Wilkins, Bell heads off to college to play for Vanderbilt content he finished with a productive season as well as with awards in tow. He was also named 6A All-State and was picked to play in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star game.

Today, he adds the Super All-Metro boys Player of the Year award to his list of achievements. He edged another All-State pick and Alabama All-Star, G.W. Boon of Sparkman, for the award."

One other note on Boon, to put his first-team 6A all-state designation into context.

Georgetown's Jonathan Wallace, who many of you saw hit the key shot in their win over North Carolina, was Georgetown's third leading scorer this year as a junior and was one of the nation's top 3-point shooters. He was also a teammate of Boon's three years ago. Wallace did not make first-team 6A all-state when he was a senior at Sparkman.

Jay-R Stowbridge started 13 games for Nebraska this year as a freshman and played in every game, averaging nearly 20 mpg. He was a star for Sparkman last year, when they were one of the top couple of teams in Alabama. Stowbridge did not make first-team 6A all-state last year in his senior year.

This is not brand-new but I don't think it was ever posted. Shazier was named second-team all-state Virginia in the largest class (AAA) by the coaches association. (He didn't make the ten-man writers' all-state team.)

Virginia - Group AAA

First Team
Brandon Rozzell, Highland Springs, 6-3, sr.
Myles Holley, Booker T. Washington, 6-5, sr.
Ridge McKeither, George Washington, 6-5, sr.
Mike Davis, T.C. Williams, 6-9, sr.
Jamar Abrams, Highland Springs, 6-7, sr.

Second team
Cameron Long, Freedom, 6-4, sr.; Andre Jones, Nansemond River, 6-2, jr.; Braxton Byerson, Thomas Dale, 6-2, sr.; Daryl Shazier, Menchville, 6-0, sr. ; Danny Jones, Herndon, 6-7, sr.

The talent level of these teams is not as high as that of Boon's all-state Alabama team, but it's still nice company to be in.
