His stats look good, anyone know anything about his size, and the competition he faced?

He's 6'5", maybe 6'6". Competition was fairly weak. It looks like he was a post player in H.S. who would have to make a major transition to being more of a wing at the D1 level.
Apparently there was no D1 interest until he played well in the playoffs. Before that, the linked article indicates he was set to go to Carnegie-Mellon.
My guess is that the Bison are not offering a hoops scholarship but rather some other kind of more limited financial aid, which might be more than he was going to get from D3 Carnegie-Mellon. Lafayette also is listed as having interest. LC already had given out their three scholarships for next year but now they apparently have a fourth one available, as it is reported that their best frosh from this year, Andre Hines, is leaving. LC has also been mentioned recently as recruiting some other second tier players, including at least one JUCO that AU was also looking at.

For that matter, aren't the Bison already maxxed out in terms of available basketball scholarships for this fall?
Will Atlas shrug? Who is John Galt? |

No. Pat was aggressively pursuing Scott Saunders last fall, even after having received commitments from the other three. (Saunders ended up at Rice.) At that time, there seemed to be three theories as to where the fourth spot came from:
1. The Bison only gave out two scholarships to the Class of '08 (Mastro and Griffin). The third scholarship from that year might still be available, OR it might have been given that year to Abe, who originally only received need-based aid. In either case, the scholarship would be available for this coming year. (The three already given out are replacements for McN, Brown, and Clark, who were the first three scholarship recipients.)
2. Possibly the Trustees have amended the original scholarship policy to give Pat thirteen scholarships (the NCAA limit) instead of the twelve (i.e. three per year) originally granted. Some of our league competitors (Holy Cross, American, and maybe others) give out thirteen, and it is possible, given the team's success, that they decided to level the playing field. I think this one is a bit unlikely, since nothing has ever appeared in print, but it is certainly possible.
3. Perhaps one of this year's recruits is receiving need-based aid (similar to Abe), as opposed to a basketball scholarship. I think this is a bit unlikely but definitely possible.
