Lehigh embarks on its 29 game (minimum) hoop journey Saturday as the Mountain Hawks travel 176 miles north to Ithaca to take on the Ivy League’s pre-season #1 pick (rivals.com), Cornell. All in all, a fair match-up and good opening day test.

Jeff Sagarin seems less impressed with The Big Red and has tabbed them to finish 4th among the Ivies, grading out at #224 among the nation’s 341 D-1 teams. In fact, it you subscribe to the Sagarin methodology, you might conclude that Lehigh – except for its Nov. 23rd date with the Terps, should find itself right at home throughout the OOC and PL campaigns.

Opponent / Home(H) or Away(A) / League / Sagarin Ranking

Cornell / A / Ivy / 224
St. Peter’s / H / Metro Atlantic / 254
St. Francis / A / Northeast / 315
Albany / A / America East / 158
Maryland / A / Atlantic Coast / 15
NJIT / H / Independent / 334
Quinnipiac / H / Northeast / 267
Central Conn. St. / A / Northeast / 200
Stony Brook / H / America East / 290
Harvard / H / Ivy / 246
Monmouth / H / Northeast / 229
Penn State / A / Big Ten / 143
Columbia / A / Ivy / 253
Princeton / H / Ivy / 220

Average Opponent Ranking: 225
Lehigh Ranking: 232

Sagarin places the Patriot League on the 23rd rung of the 32 step D-1 Conference ladder and names Holy Cross as his pre-season pick to win it all. His rankings follow:

Holy Cross - 90
Bucknell – 99
American - 193
Lehigh – 232
Colgate – 265
Navy – 273
Lafayette – 286
Army – 313

    In response to LU65

Approaching Day One perhaps we should look "ahead" instead at the recently released rivals.com pre-season rankings. Here they are for the PL:

Holy Cross = 77
Bucknell = 94
Lehigh = 233
American = 253
Colgate = 268
Army = 277
Lafayette = 282
Navy = 298

As for LU's OOC competition, the numbers follow:

Cornell = 107
St. Peter's = 331
St. Francis = 284
Albany = 204
Maryland = not yet released yet picked 5th in ACC
NJIT = 334
Quinnipiac = 261
Central Conn = 222
Stony Brook = 288
Harvard = 262
Monmouth = 279
Penn State = not yet released yet picked 9th in Big 10
Columbia = 153
Princeton = 202

Same observation: Whether looking at Sagarin or rivals.com data, Lehigh seems well-placed to compete in OOC and PL play this year.
