Stoney Brook Game Notes are up:

http://www.lehighsports.com/sports/mbball/gamenot e...

If experience means anything, we're in for another tough game tonight, despite our opponent's meager 1-6 record coming into the contest. The Seawolves will undoubtedly send out 3 seniors and 2 juniors to start the game. If all goes according to Hoyle (why shouldn't it, Coach Reed hasn't waived yet), we'll counter with 1 senior, 1 junior, 2 sophomores, and 1 freshman. SB players to keep an eye, if worried - and you should be - about our play under the glass in recent games (two game deficit of 64 to 90), would be: Emanuel Neto, their 6'9" Senior center and his rebounding partner, Demetrius Young, a 6'6" forward. Together they pull down 15.3 rpg. Neto is the America East 4th leading rebounder (as a point of reference, B. White is the 2nd leading rebounder in the PL at 7.9 rpg). Of equal concern, should be their senior Guard combo of Ricky Lucas and Mitchell Beauford. Together, they're averaging 22.3 ppg. Beauford in not shy, throwing up 36 shots in his last two games (20 against Kentucky and 16 against Dartmouth). Only one was from beyond the arc. The team seems to understand its weakness, shooting just .267 from the 3 point zone. The SB schedule makers aren't shy either, positioning their team up against not only Kentucky but Villanova. Two losses, but nonetheless ambitious. In games we can relate to, the Seawolves have already loss to both Lafayette and American - each by 8 points - if we needed added incentive. So, it won't be easy (it never seems to be that way for us), but if we're able to match them rebound for rebound, Lehigh should walk away with its 4th "W" of the season, banking on its edge in FG% (.428 to .379), Assists (13.3 to 7.6), Blocks (3.9 to 1.4) and perhaps most importantly 3pt FG% (.404 to .267). Holding SB to their 58.3 scoring output would help, as well. It seems the Mountain Hawks are 50 and 14 over the past five seasons when the enemy fails to crack 60.

Forget the forecast of snow in the Valley tonight, be one of the 693 in attendance (our home average to date) tonight and support our young team.

See you at Stabler!

What a fun night for the 794 on hand. Yeah, that includes a number of season ticket "no-shows," I'm sure.

Highs and Lows

+++s

Coach Reed decides, for defensive purposes, to start the "more experienced" soph Dave Buckberger on one of the wings. He promptly drains his first shot and 7 of his next 9 (5 from beyond the arc)to finish with 21 points. The freshman he replaced in the starting lineup, Rob Keefer, didn't hang his head but instead calmly hit 3 of 5 (2 for 2 from long range) in his 17 minutes of play.

All 14 dressed for the game say action - even 5'6" frosh, Luke Pelullo. Me and everyone in Section 4 challenge the Media Guide that lists Luke at 5'9." Must have been a typo.

The way we broke the Stoney Brook full to 3/4 court zone press all night and committed only 10 TOs. The same pressure forced Kentucky into 23 TOs just one week ago.

Marquis Hall's 10 assists, 6 rebounds and 0 turnovers. He showed tremendous patience and maturity throughout the game and realized when his shot wasn't there to find the open man with a better look at the basket.

Brian White's 10 boards, 13 points and his baseline driving dunk over two defenders - a shot you'd expect to see if watching an NBA or top flight ACC game. It actually got the 150+ students on their feet along with half the others in the arena.

Bench play. The non-starters contributed 23 of the 76 points scored in the game. That 30% matches nicely the time they spent on the court (56 min/200 min) or 28%.

11 for 15 from beyond the arc. Lehigh improves its already fine mark in this regard, now canning .442 of its long-distance shots (2nd best in the PL). It's not like Stoney Brook is capable of guarding against the three. They held Dartmouth to 13.3% and Kentucky to 10.0% in their prior two games. Lehigh's rapid ball movement was the difference.

Michael Ojo. Will he ever miss a shot? The 6'5" guard/small forward, who can play above the rim, hit another three. That's 2 for 2 (the first being against Albany) in his college career spanning 6 minutes of playing time. Oddly enough, he didn't need all six minutes. The shots came within seconds of his stepping onto the court. Ojo should be fun to watch down the road.

First half ball pressure. It was frantic. Lehigh held SB to 6 for 22 shooting in the first 20 minutes of play.

---s

Offensive rebounding. While we out-rebounded SB, only 8 of our 37 boards were off the offensive glass. The negative trend continues. In the preceding three games the OR numbers were: 7, 10, and 10. Second and third chance points are not coming our way.

Attendance. Second worse in the PL - topping only Colgate. Let's hope the word spreads on campus and around the Valley that Lehigh has a young and talented team that is fun to watch and could surprise once PL play begins. If not this year, then next.

I'm on the other side of the country but the attendance numbers sound ugly. I'm not sure Stabler is totally to blame either. I know a lot of people I talked to had high hopes for the program after the NCAA appearance and were disappointed when it seemed to tread water then regress the last couple of years.

I remain hopeful this year of maybe grabbing second place and hosting a couple of tournament games but like they're discussing on the BU board, it looks like HC is the team to beat.
