Keefer earns third Rookie of the Week honor

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – For the third time this season freshman Rob Keefer has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, it was announced on Monday. Keefer averaged 9.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in three games for the Mountain Hawks last week, including a career-high 16 points in Lehigh’s 68-49 victory over Princeton on Sunday. On the season, Keefer is averaging 8.3 points and 3.4 rebounds. He leads all Patriot League freshmen in scoring, field goal percentage and three-point field goals and leads all Lehigh freshmen in minutes, points and rebounds.

LU Press Release dated 1/1/2007

Marquis Hall named Rookie of the Week for the second time
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - For the season, Hall is averaging 8.3 points and 4.7 assists in 29.2 minutes of action per game. The business major has hit for double figures five times this season and has led Lehigh in assists in 13 games.

Note: Marquis went on to win nine PL Rookie of the Week awards and a record eight consecutive awards. With seven weeks to go, Keefer has a chance to do the same in the ’07-’08 campaign.

Rob Keefer may well hold the key to the team’s success this year. The 6’3” guard from North Wales (PA) is a pure shooter. Given the time (and he’s adept at finding space around the perimeter), he’ll knock down 3’s with the best of them, canning 1 of out every 2 he takes. He displays remarkable calm and maturity for a 19 year-old kid in his first year of Division I ball. He doesn’t appear to be in awe of anyone or anything as could be seen in his performances against the big boys on the road (Maryland: 12 pts. and 6 rebounds in 25 minutes; Penn State: 8 pts. and 7 rebounds in 24 minutes). Taken out of the starting lineup after the first five games of the season for “experience” reasons (the team went with sophomore guard, Dave Buchberger), Keefer has sparked the team performance off the bench on more than one occasion this year. When he’s in the game, opposing teams would be wise to give him some space, too, as he doesn’t miss often from the free throw line, draining 81.3% of his shots.

With the inside game coming along nicely (Bran White and Zahir Carrington each averaging 10+ pts/night), an outside threat like Keefer may be just what’s needed to keep Lehigh competitive this year in the PL. And, if it’s not Keefer, perhaps the perimeter points will come from one of his fellow guards: Sophomore, Dave Buchberger (22-41 FG and 12-20 3PT) or Junior, Matt Szalachowski (36-72 FG and 12-36 3PT). Either way, look for the three of them to get their shots and keep the defenses wondering who’s go the hot hand that night. Of course, let’s not forget our team’s leading scorer, point guard, Marquis Hall, averaging 12.3 ppg. When he’s not hitting his shots (recent dry spell has everyone talking), may he continue to be at the top of his game in distributing and sake keeping the ball (PL leader in Assists to Turnovers @ 2.19 and second in Assists per game @ 5.0).

It promises to be a fun year. Hope to see you at Stabler this Saturday as the PL Season gets underway with a 7 o’clock tip against American U.

While this year could be special for the Mountain Hawks, you gotta like what the future holds in store. Keefer and Small (19 point performance off the bench stepping into Marquis Hall's shoes two nights ago) are just two of the freshman to watch. Don't lose sight of Michael Ojo, our 6 foot 5 inch guard from Santa Monica, California. He didn't travel 3000 miles to sit on the bench. He can leap, dunk and score with the best of them. Think Bryan White with an outside shot. And, wonder if one of these days one of our seven foot recruits becomes effective. Perhaps frosh, David Safstrom, will be that man. Time will tell. In the meantime, sit back and enjoy a team that loves to play together and witness progress nightly. Remember the stars of today, Hall and Carrington (sorry Bryan White ... team's only senior), are only sophomores.
