Well, we did it again last night. We fell behind quickly with three turnovers, three missed rebound opportunities and an errant shot all within the first 92 seconds of play. Meanwhile Colgate's Kendall Chones and Kyle Roemer connected on three two-pointers and it was 6-0 before you got comfortable in your seat. To our credit, we did not tank but keep the game close for the next 18 ½ minutes as the Raiders toyed with us while maintaining 3 to 9 point leads. Colgate was able to get the ball into Kendall Chones (6 foot 6 inch, 250 lb, senior forward) with ease. Soft hook and fall-aways from 5-10 followed. He walked in the locker at the Half with 13 points on 6-9 shooting. The second half was not so kind to Kendall, as Lehigh limited him to fewer touches on 2 for 6 shooting, as Coach Reed rotated big men (fresh legs and long arms) into and out of the game at will. It seemed to work. .Kyle Roemer, their talented guard and team high-scorer, was held in check the first twenty minutes, going 1 for 4, thanks to blanket coverage by Matt Szalachowski and others. Roemer did, however, find his range in the second half and finish the game with 16 points on 5 for 15 shooting.(4 for 7 from three) and 10 boards. As expected, Colgate was quick to shoot the ball, throwing up 71 shots compared to the Lehigh game total of 50. We were just that much more productive, hitting 44% of our FGs to Colgate's 33.8%. One has to wonder how much more we might have scored had the game planned call for a few more threes. I can not recall when, if ever, we launched fewer than four attempts from behind the line. And, we are a good three point shooting club!

The game ball - if one were to be awarded - had to go to Prentice Small, our 5 foot, 9 inch Freshman Guard, who game off the bench to score 19 points on 6 for 8 shooting (1 for 1 from three) and 6 for 8 form the line in 27 minutes of play (twice his normal amount). Marquis Hall, who saw limited action in the first half, picked up this third foul at the 14 second mark of the second half. From that moment on, it was Prentice's team to run and run he did, slicing through the lane and finding open spaces where there was not any and going 5 for 5 after intermission. The St. John the Baptist (1st team All-Long Island) star from West Babylon is sure fun to watch and a real crowd-pleaser. Marquis Hall did eventually return, however, and at the 7:48 minute mark of the second half, made a brilliant pass to Small for an open three pointer that put Lehigh up by two, 46-44, a lead they would never give up. As you might expect, Hall canned a few foul shots down the stretch to ice the game, as well.

I have said this before but it deserves repeating. This team is young. Consider the facts: Last night LU started 1 senior, 1 junior, 2 sophomores, and 1 freshman. Colgate came out of the gates with 2 seniors and 3 juniors who played 76.5% of the minutes compared to Lehigh's younger starter's 64.5%. Lehigh 200 game minutes were split: 14.5% senior, 20.0% junior, 39.5% sophomore, and 26% freshmen. Colgate, on the other hand, awarded 86% of their minutes to seniors and juniors. Lehigh, soon to be called the equal opportunity team, played 10 and had 9 score. This is not that unusual for the Brown and White. And you are never sure - from one night to the night - who will be the team high scorer. Big double-digit numbers have been posted this year by Hall, Carrington, White, Keefer, Buchberger, and now Small. Two of our top three scorers are sophomores (Hall and Carrington). Three players own double-digit scoring averages (with senior, Bryan White) added to the mix of Carrington and Hall. As for the freshman class, Keefer has won a number of Rookie of the Week honors and I can only assume Small will be in the running for that award this week, based on his performance last night.

Nice win, guys. But, still looking for 40 minutes of basketball. That said, 2-2 looks a lot better than 0-2.

Next up: Lafayette (4-0) at home on Saturday night. Enough said.
