Commentary:

A win in Lewisburg tonight - and please do not write off the chance of that happening - would propel the streaking Mountain Hawks, winners of the last three, into a no worse than second place tie in the crowded PL. Of course, there’s a much longer streak to talk about. It is Bucknell’s 38 PL wins at home without a loss. What would it take for the Mountain Hawks to do what they did back in 2003 when they spoiled opening night at Sokja by beating The Bison 60-56? A solid effort for sure, but maybe nothing more than “more of the recent same” out of us and continued inconsistent play out of The Bison. Throw in a match-up problem or two our power forwards and speedy guards may cause them and some solid perimeter D (see notes below) and who knows. Stranger things have happened.

About that perimeter D…..once the laughing stock of the League for the way in which we defended the 3, the Mountain Hawks have turned it around in a big way. BU numbers – solid and steady over the long haul - are shown for comparative purposes.

LU 3FG Defense
19 Games .406 (BU .326)
5 PL Games .400 (BU .358)
Last 3 PL Games .333 (BU .351)

Great strides forward have been made in the team’s overall defense, as well.

LU FG Defense
19 Games .421 (BU .410)
5 PL Games .388 (BU .425)

If White and Carrington can dominate the boards and give us a few extra points and minutes above their averages (30+ minutes of play each and a combined 25 points), while our guards keep Castleberry and Griffin in check with our D of recent games, I believe we’ll be in the game. It may then come down to, as it has on some many occasions this year, who steps off the bench with a double-digit surprise game? Anderson, Keefer and Small quickly come to mind. They’ve done it before. Why not tonight?

Thank God for PL All-Access. It should be fun to watch.

D WINS IT

Lehigh has learned their lesson well, D wins games in the Patriot League. After stumbling out of the blocks in their first two games, giving up a combined 150 points to AU and Navy on overall and three point FG shooting percentages of .400 and .468, respectively, the Mountain Hawks have righted the ship. BU hit just 36.1% of their shoots last night and only 35.7% from beyond the arc. Mix in those numbers with the Mountain Hawk defensive performances over the past two weeks (wins against Army, Colgate, and Lafayette) and you have 4 games defensive averages of .371 and .339 from three point range. Yes, defense wins games in the Patriot League.

The game went according to recent script. First on defense, they kept Castelberry and Griffin in check (see wish list post above), allowing the pair a combined 12 points on 4 for 21 shooting. Tyree was all but absent, hitting 1 for 2 from the field. Dareen Mastropaolo picked up 8, a couple off his average. Of note is the fact that Lehigh shot 21 fewer field goal attempts than Bucknell (40 to 61) yet hit with far greater accuracy (45% to 36.1%). The Mountain Hawks got to the line 27 times and sank 20, while sending The Bison to the stripe only 8 times. Carrington and White, stayed clear of fouls, logged 30 plus minutes, scored a combined 32 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. Add to that the return to form of Marquis Hall, scoring 13 on 5 for 10 shooting and, what is beginning to be a staple of his play, 3 for 4 from the line when most needed - in the final minutes of play. Toss in another double double from BWhite and 19 valuable minutes off the bench by Freshman, Prentice Small (7 points, calming sinking a crucial free throw at the end of the game) and you have what the Mountain Hawk fan had hoped for - a win, at last, at Sokja.

The PL is truly up for grabs this year. A key stat to keep your eye on might be road wins. Already, every team but one (Holy Cross) has posted one. In fact, five teams, Lehigh included, have two and the season has not yet reached the half way mark.

Next up: 1-5 Holy Cross at the Hart Center in Worcester at Noon on Saturday.
