Now other restaurants are getting into the act. From today's Miami Herald:

GAINESVILLE - With little else to get excited about in the waning moments of Florida's 90-53 victory against Mississippi, a seemingly hungry crowd of 11,390 cheered on Taurean Green as though he was about to win the national championship.

With eight seconds remaining, the Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons product calmly sank two free throws to account for the Gators' 89th and 90th points -- and earn the fans at the O'Connell Center free six-inch Subway sandwiches.

I'm sure they give away far more 6 inch Subways by offering them for 90 points from Florida than Abners gives away cheesesteaks by offering them for 100 Quaker points. Moreover, I'm sure no one has to wait for 2 hours to get their sandwich.

Abner's certainly didn't invent the idea....

I remember going to Dallas Mavericks games in the 80s and the crowd would start chanting "Pi-zza! Pi-zza!" toward the ends of some games. Pizza Hut had a promotion where if the Mavs scored more than 125 pts in a game, everyone got a free pizza.

The Penguins used to have the Chili goal from Wendy's for the 7th goal. Not that will happen any time soon, even if they are playing.

of course, I bet none of those other teams have a secret deal between the coach and promoter to make sure it never happens, like Dunph has with Abner's.....
