Cheer up Harvard fans. Gonzaga's Max Kenyi, who will be headed to Cambridge in the fall was the outstanding player on the court last night as he guided his team to the Washington Catholic league's tournament championship against an O'Connel team led by Georgetown-bound Jason Clarke (26 points) and UNC-bound Kendall Marshall. Kenyi was 13-16 from the field scoring inside and out and leading all scorers with 30 points in the 71-63 victory. He did it all with steals, dunks, blocks, boards, three-point shooting, you name it. He made a good case for himself as the Washington All-Met player of the year (Clarke is the other strong candidate). On a slightly down note for Harvard, Frank Ben-Eze, who has been hobbled all year by a stress fracture, made only a brief appearance at the end of the game. Frank has had a very difficult year due to injury and it remains to be seen how much this year will contribute to/slow down his overall development. Having seen some Ivy League play, and having seen Frank perform when he was healthy, I believe that when he recovers physically, he has the gifts to become a dominant inside presence in the league. Together Max and Frank should be able to give a boost to Harvard's program next year. Congratulations, they should be fun to watch.

I remember the story of a Harvard big man who had a stress fracture which involved the right leg. I remember him sitting on the bench watching his team rack up record losses, while chewing up half a year of Ivy eligibility. Then, he charged back with a solid campaign, only to have a broken hand derail his development the following year. And finally when his career was getting on track, he had to shut it down midseason. Having trouble remembering the guy's name though, it was so long ago...
