I think Craig can do better.

Maybe, but the money PC can throw at him will be very hard to turn down.

Consdering the year that Brown had, I would hate for the Ivy's to lose this caliber of coach. Besides, I do not think that Providence is a big step up especially if Brown continues the success it had this year.

If you're a basketball coach by profession, Providence is a BIG step up from Brown. That's like saying Syracuse isn't a big step up from Cornell, UCONN isn't a big step up from Yale, St. John's isn't a big step up from Columbia, Boston College isn't a big step up from Harvard and Villanova isn't a big step up from Penn.

I understand what you're saying. It is a Big East team but with the expanded conference, do you think that teams like Providence will go the NCAA's as they did in the past? My opinion is they will have a harder time.

Thanks Howard for restoring the sanity here. First, the money Providence will offer its coach will dwarf Craig Robinson's current salary. But setting that aside for the moment, turning down an offer from Providence ignores the risk-reward profile. Brown's not catching Cornell next year for sure given the loss of two 1st team All Ivies. (Normally I'd say they have no shot for the year after either, but Bru/Old Bear sold me on Sullivan plus Robinson's pretty good as a coach, so who knows?) Anyway, there's no clear path to an Ivy Championship... after which a guy like Robinson might aspire to... a Big East job (MAYBE a better one than Providence, but not that much better). So you guys are telling me he's going to pass on a Big East job right now? No way.

Incidentally, this isn't a shot at Robinson or Brown. Ivies have to expect that their coaches view their jobs as steppingstones (including Penn). Brown obviously made a very strong hire in Robinson and so it's natural that good offers are going to come along.

If a guy like Robinson thinks he can coach will he have an easier time going to the NCAAs being the one team from the Ivies or one of five or six teams from the Big East?

PC has the smallest undergrad. population and the least diverse, in the BE. It has higher academic requirements than most and no place to hide in it's curiculum which is why it rarely takes transfers. Limited local recruiting, no on-campus arena, limited resources, and an unrrealistic fan base longing for the '60s. It's really out of place in the currrent Big East. Tougher job now than a decade or two ago. It's a big risk, could be up and out or a real dead end.

I think you are right about the difficulties at PC, similar to those at St. John's & Seton Hall. Still a good coach believes in his own ability & the season Robinson had at Brown will encourage that belief. If offered, he might take the challenge. If he gets the Friars into an NIT & then an NCAA, he can move further up the chain.

St. John and Seton Hall at least have Jersey $ NY and larger schools, PC is worse.

This job isn't ideal for many reasons. As far as regional big conference openings go, this one probably ranks last. I guess I feel like there would be better opportunities than this for the guy, who I obviously think of very highly.

But, it is still Big East, and much bigger money than Brown. More exposure. And, he'd be inheriting a team that can play some. Plus, this is a good time to be leaving Brown, as the next few teams aren't as likely to finish with 19 wins.

My sense is that Robinson would look at this opportunity holistically, and consider issues beyond exposure and dollars. I think PC's institutional challenges and lack of academic cache would bother Craig. It would be interesting to know how he perceived Carmody's move to Northwestern, which has its own institutional challenges, but at the very least is a strong academic school.

Who knows. If he gets the chance, I couldn't fault him under either scenario, but I'd bet he'll be Brown's coach next year.
LET'S go BRU-no (duh. nuh. nuh-nuh-nuh)

No doubt Old Bear remembers Lenny Wilkens and Mike Riordan and JTII and any other number of 60s PC stars (hence the "Old"), but if you are going to be both unrealistic and a PC fan you might as well long for the 70s. It wouldn't even have to be the Ernie D/Marvin Barnes/Kevin Stacom 70s (although no way Bill Walton goes 21 of 22 against Marvin). The Hassett/Campbell/Eason/Mi scevicious (sp?) Friars, who somehow ran an offense with a center in the high post without it being blessed by Princeton first, would be just fine.

Of course, you don't have to go nearly so far back as to remember the '87 PC Final Four team led by Pitino and Billy Donovan, taking full advantage of the new 3 point shot.

Earnie D, Marvin and Jimmy Walker (the best Friar of all time) would not be admitted to PC today. And I do remember Lenny Wilkins, Johnny Eagan, Mayor Ray Flynn, Vinny Earnst and Jim Hadnot.

Maybe, but it is my understanding that they've all committed to Harvard.

(And yes, Jimmy Walker, that's who I was blanking on.)
