Saw this on Oregonlive.com, the website for Portland's main newspaper, "The Oregonian." This came from seemingly nowhere-- Robinson gets the job after a number of coaches (probobly double digits) turned the Beavers down, including Randy Bennett of St. Mary's and Bill Grier of San Diego. Ron Hunter of IUPUI and Ken Bone of Portland State were also in the mix- not sure whether either was actually offered the job.
Congrats to Robinson- and good luck. He'll need it, as Oregon State has maybe 2-3 pac-10 quality players on its roster. They days of Gary Payton, and even of Brent Barry are long gone.

CBS Sportsline is now reporting it also.

Let's Not Announce This as a Fact 04-06-08 10:35 PM - Post#47896
In response to CUJacob
This is a blog! Based on unnamed sources. While this may turn out to be true, I wouldn't title it as a fact (unless YOU have inside information). If the guy actually had the story, he wouldn't simply blog it like this---he would go to Robinson and confirm. Why not just report it as it is....this sounds like a Vecsey column. It's basketball gossip.
If it is true, they must be paying him bundles and bundles---it is not a great job to take.

the oregonian guy is one of that newspaper's print columnists and is a three-time pulitzer nominee. nothing shabby there.
http://blog.oregonlive.com/johncanzano/about.html
the story is also confirmed by the local paper in corvallis, where oregon state is located:

Didn't that reporter from the Times win a Pulitzer before being exposed? Nothing against this guy, who may be a great reporter, but it's just hard to believe Robinson would take a job that the IUPUI coach would turn down.
Then again, maybe he saw tough times ahead.

If both the college hoops beat writer for the Oregonian and the local Corvallis paper have this, I'd say it's a done deal.
This doesn't even require much work. They're hanging out all day in the same hotel lobby with all the OSU people in San Antonio.

Look, I don't doubt that what they heard from OSU people gave him the story. It's not a deal though until Robinson says yes.
Do you think this is a good move though? Robinson probably could have gotten a job with a team that is more likely to win.

Robinson hired at Oregon State 04-06-08 11:26 PM - Post#47905
In response to palestra38
I don't think the OSU people would be leaking this to the reporters covering them if he didn't say yes.
Hey, strike while the iron's hot, especially if it's a multi-year deal. Especially when a Pac-10 school comes calling. The OSU program's in terrible shape, so there's nowhere to go but up, but even if it doesn't he'll net plenty more money than he would at Brown. And he has the example down the road in New Haven about what can happen if you don't move after you've come close but haven't won a championship. Plus I don't think they have the institutional barriers of a Providence, if that was his other option.

If Robinson's OSU team finishes in 9th place in the Pac-10 next year, he should handily be conference coach of the year.
As someone who follows the pac-10 pretty closely, I can say that the disparity in talent between Oregon State and 8th place Washington/9th place Cal (which just hired ex Stanford coach Mike Montgomery) was huge.
I understand Robinson's decision- hard to turn down a pac-10 school, but I have a hard time seeing him attaining much success, and this is from someone who has a ton of respect for Robinson's coaching abilities.

It took Dunphy 17 years and a slew of titles to land an A-10 job. O'Hanlon is in the Patriot League. Jackson is in the MEAC. Donahue is in the Ivies and all of these guys were involved with multiple title winners.
The last Ivy coach to jump to the Pac-10 was Bob Weinhauer and he took Penn to the Final Four. For Robinson, with two years of head coaching experience at an Ivy team that didn't even win a title, with a 30-27 Ivy record and only three wins over teams in the Top 150, and before that work as an assistant at a bad Northwestern team, for him to get a Pac-10 job is amazing, both a testament to his charisma and OSU's desperation (and perhaps his famous brother-in-law).
It's unprecedented.
Wow.
Maybe Steve Donahue could get the Providence job.
I have no idea where Brown goes now, except it must be a great place to coach if you can finish second and jump to the Pac-10.

The meeting between Robinson and the OSU AD in the AD's hotel suite has to be one of the great motivational talks of all time. I hope someone recorded it; Audible.com could make a mint selling the digital downloads.

According to ESPN, the job has been offered, but Robinson has not yet accepted it.

Seems to me as a matter of journalistic due diligence, you have to get something from the other side of the deal or you have to put some form of disclaimer that you have not obtained confirmation.

I still see nothing declaring that this is a done deal on the Robinson side---something pointed out by the last letter writer to the blogster.

Obama gets Oregon anyway. If it is that important, though, Obama can be the next coach at OSU.

OSU has scheduled a press conference for 4:00 p.m. to announce the new hire. If it's not Robinson, then the OSU athletic department should be hired as a new intelligence agency because it's really good at misinformation and keeping secrets.
