Does anyone know if Penn recruited Aaron Gray, now the backlup center at Pitt. He is a 7 footer from Emmaus, PA and an outstanding student. He would be a perfect fit at Penn. Not only is he a 7 footer but he is a big body type. Scored 15 points in 15 minutes against Villanova Sunday. Played in the Sonny Hill League so Fran must certainly have known about him.

Most 7 footers w/ big bodies that score 15 points in 15 minutes at Pitt are never really ivy recruits...

well U wasn't really an Ivy Recruit either and he was convinced to come to Penn. At one time we almost had Gene Banks. Bill Bradley -- a much better player than Aaron Gray dropped Duke for Princeton. Banks dropped Penn for Duke. You never know if a recriuit will come until you make the pitch. I'm trying to find out if we even pitched big Mr. Gray.

It's differnt these days. As for U, he had signed a scholarship w/ LBSU I believe, so if he'd gone to a school w/ a scholarship, he would have had to sit out a year.

U had signed an LOI with Long Beach State.
If Gray was ever on Penn's radar, he was a faint blip. Big men are probably the hardest position to recruit in the Ivies, simply because it's the hardest position to recruit period. You rarely have a true center in the league. Right now Cusworth's the only one I can think of (Wallace is a Princeton center, Martin's really more of a PF). Penn's been scratching like mad the past few years for a true center and there've been some close calls. If you want a nice example of what-might-have-been take Nick Smith at Illinois, who's 7-2, rail-thin, and actually contributing. He came very close to coming to Penn where he probably would have been a pretty major factor.

U did spend a year at Prep School - Gene Banks (from West Philly High - my Mom's HS) had Penn as his first choice - but the freshman team stuff tipped things Duke's way - Gene did end up playing in the Palestra his Senior year as his homecoming game to West Philly - Mike G. made our hands of stone center (George Noon) look bad (or was that his hands of stone)
