Since P38 chose not to make the exciting 4-hour drive to Ithaca, I'll be his substitute grader. No grade inflation here.
Whitehurst: A-. Gets his first start, career high in minutes (27) and points (8) and only 1 TO. Not credited with any steals but he forced a few TOs and pressured his man all over the court. It now should be clear to all he can play, the question is where and how much. Plus the argument can shift to: Should Fran have been playing him all along or did he wisely bring along slowly?
Jaaber: B+. 14 points, six boards, 5 steals, 2 blocks. Just a typical night at the office. Points off for a pitiful dunk attempt. It did go in, but Fran looked ready to strangle him. If Ibby comes back next year a better three-point shooter he is going to be unstoppable.
Begley: B. Quiet night, controlled tempo, didn't look much for the three. Did have a Lucky Seven triple (pts., boards, assists) which should make him a bundle at the casinos.
Oz: B. Came off the bench and was pretty steady in his 19 minutes. Twice got fouled on three-point shots (one of which he made) and had 3 assists, 0 TOs and a solid 9 points.
Danley: B-. 5-7 from the field is nice and his mid-range game has really improved. But only 1 rebound? And 0-2 from the line? And Taylor and Naeve combine for 18?
Fikiel: B-. 7 rebounds. That's right. SEVEN. Add that to the 8 points and it makes up for the three TOs (all of which I believe were traveling calls on layups).
Zoller: C+. Seemed hobbled again by that darn ankle. As usual, a bunch of nice hustle plays, but a rushed airball three, 4 TOs (many of the what-was-he-thinking variety) , 4 fouls and only 4 rebounds in 23 minutes keep his grade down.
Pettinella: C+. Only 9 minutes of play but 3 offensive boards and a steal. Also a number of decent passes - not sure how he didn't get credited with an assist.
Off to the Apple.
