Oof. For the first time in a long time, the Yale coach outcoaches the Brown coach. Brown also choked a little in this one after holding a second half lead, and wilting down the stretch.
This was a very poor Ivy debut for Jesse Agel.
Yale obviously watched the UVA tape, because all they did was overplay Brown throughout the 2nd half, and Brown did not adjust. That's why Brown got very few outside shots down the stretch when they needed them most. Brown was totally stifled by Yale's defensive overplaying had a very hard time moving the ball up top. But there were no cuts to get guys open, not enough back door passes (there's that phrase again). No adjustments whatsoever, preventing Brown from taking advantage of where the opportunities were.
Brown also was in the bonus with almost 12 minutes to go, but between relatively few FTs after that and poor FT shooting, they didn't take advantage. Again, a bit of a choke.
My favorite part was in the last few minutes when Brown could not get a three off, so Brown down 6 and 8 with only a few minutes to go kept pounding it inside.
Didn't help that Brown shot poorly, but that had something to do with Yale taking away the outside shot in the 2nd half.
Brown also ran out of gas in the end of the game, but that was due to the fact that Agel played them all the minutes, with only Gruber and Kane getting a handful of minutes to spell guys. Agel's going to have to learn that you have to play more than 5 guys in Ivy play. You just can't trot out 5 guys to play 80 minutes in a weekend.
Yale's #24 showed he was quite a shooter with a HUGE 2nd half, and Yale hit everything they threw up there down the stretch. Guys who don't hit threes were making fall away threes, guys who shoot 40% from the FT line end up going 4-4 down the stretch, so there was clearly a little luck and good karma involved on Yale's part. They hit a ton of big shots, and really earned the win between their defensive pressure and their ability to hit some impressive shots.
Tough game for Skrelja - I don't know where his scoring ability has gone, but he just looked uncomfortable. Chris is a talented kid and can score, but he just hasn't looked comfortable taking the ball to the hoop or shooting. Another poor one for Friske too.
Great game for Mullery, solid for Sullivan, and ok for Williams.

I should amenda that re: Friske. While he needs to take more than 5 shots, he did have some rebounds and assists.

Yes, that was incredibly ugly and discouraging. I expect all the Ivy teams to defend Brown the same way, extreme pressure and overplaying on the perimieter. None of Brown's guards can do much off the dribble so they are very easy to defend. Brown also gets nothing in tranisition so there are never any easy baskets.
Mullery did play well although he missed some big FTs.
Coach Agel has got to stop arguing every single call with the refs. I know they weren't great tonight but I was sitting behind the bench and could see how annoyed they were getting with him.

4-14 from three by Yale, 3-10 by Brown? Yale had 39 2-point FGA, Brown 44. Now that's some old-school (as in mid-80s) shot distribution.

Yale did a good job pressuring Brown on the perimeter and preventing the threes.
This was also the first game I have seen where I noticed the longer three point line. There were several shots, especially by Yale, that I assumed were threes and was surprised when the ref said they were only worth two.

Ug! Hard to believe we have dug a deep hole after only one game, but it looks that way. Skrelja hdd a poor game, and very limited success thaking advantage of size missmatches. Yale defended Williams and Sullivan on the outside and Brown's shot selection compounded the problem. Yale used their size well, but the real difference in the second half was Zampier's shooting. I don't think that's likey to repeat very often. I don't know how Yale could have possibly lost to Bryant.

Dunno - Zampier is Yale's top scorer. So while his shooting was a little crazy at times, he is a guy who knows how to put the ball in the hoop.

I think he was 7 for 8 in the second half, usually fading away with a hand in his face.
