Perhaps Columbia will be able to reinstate the JV basketball program with the end of the bench and a few walk-ons. The double-headers in the days of freshman ball were fun. (Of course, you could have freshman players who were better than the varsity. I wish I was around to see the McMillian/Dotson freshman team -- the Byrd/Free/Mitchell team was great. JV's not the same.)) Football had an on-and-off JV program until Wilson and his staff were able to stem the program's attrition problem. Now, they are able to play a JV schedule without canceling games for lack of bodies. The game experience can only help younger players get varsity-ready.
