Quick take: Mark Cisco is an excellent prospect and will see playing time immediately for the Lion. Brian Barbour is also a promising player who has a chance to eventually become the Lions' starting point guard. Roberts, Kowalski and the kid from Farmingdale are all question marks, although at least Roberts has good size. What happened to Frankosi and Lazareau? I'm disappointed we didn't get a big time player in the March-May recruiting season. If you add, transfer Max Craig into the class, it's ok, otherwise it's not so great.

As mentioned already, 18 players can not dress. Expect 3 players to "quit" at some point. Recruiting a bunch of marginal players does nothing for Columbia.

I usually agree with your comments, but wonder if your information is correct this time. Are you certain that only 15 players can dress for a game? I'm fairly certain that I saw several Ivy League teams come into Levien last winter with more than fifteen players. In any event, all of the Ivies seem to want to start the season with at least 18 players on the roster because of attrition from injuries and whatever. That seems like a reasonable approach to me. Even if only 15 players can dress, I doubt that 3 players would quit for that reason. You always have some injuries during the season, so kids are unlikely to "quit" for that reason alone. Columbia certainly needed to bring in additional players, given the number of serious injuries the team had last year. Who knows, maybe Kowalski and the Farmingdale kid will become stars in the Ivy League. I'm sure Kowalski is a very good ball handler and the Long Island guy can shot the three.

I think the rule is that only 15 players can travel. I'm not sure if there's a limit to the number you can dress for home games.

Howard, are there ever exceptions? I thought I remembered Cornell with a crowd (dressed) on the bench at Brown.

I don't know. If players pay their own way and don't travel with the team they may be able to sit on the bench in street clothes, but I'm not even sure of that.

There's definitely a travel rule, however, the same as in football, where the road team looks like it's got 50 players and the home team dresses 90.

The travel team at the Y/H fb game gets to dress its JV players who also travel that weekend and normally play the day before. I don't know if there is a generic Ivy rule applicable to all or whether this is simply one of those cozy Yale - Harvard arrangements worked out for their convenience and advantage.

I think the rule for football is that there is one league game in which you can bring a significantly larger number of players than the oridnary travel limit (which I thought was 60). Recall some away Princeton games where Penn brought more guys. Basketball, I think, has a travel limit (thought it was 14, not sure). Other players, if they pay their own way & find their own accomodations can sit on the bench in street clothes.

I cant say with 100% certainty but I do believe 15 is the max as told to me some time back.

But let's also consider what would normally transpire in practice. The 1st unit and the 2nd unit would get most of the practice time with some of the "next" 5 rotating in. Players who are in the 15 to 18 range on the depth chart will eventually tire of the long hours or work with not much in return of playing satisfaction in practice. Even more so if the rule does apply to 15.

So no one should be surprised if a player or 2 announces that he is leaving the team to "focus on his academics" at some point.
