Re: Penn v Marist 12-10-14 01:12 AM - Post#177577
In response to Chip Bayers
Up 28 with 2:56 left, Allen has emptied his bench, and Marist coach Mike Maker still has starters in and is full-court pressing.
In fairness his starters weren't actually starters. Had I known about the injuries I surely would have taken the points. Once again our 3-point defense gets a huge statistical boost just because the opponent stinks. 4-28 with many of them wide open as usual. Palestra, I see your Muhlenberg and raise you a Haverford and a Cedric laster dunk at 100.
It is indeed a win, so that means we now have a winning streak. Yay.
The two juniors had rough nights but man is it refreshing to finally have a shooter. Took Jerome long enough...That quick release is a thing of beauty and between he and Louis being able to hit the foul line extended jumper, it helps to open other things up. Sam is fearless too, which has been sorely lacking.
Howard showed his athleticism again on d, on the o-boards and passing, and the freshman guards did a fairly nice job. One play that said it all for me was watching Foreman guard baseline and instead of taking the foul with the body, he leaned back in mid air and forced up a bad shot. 99% of the time that results in a foul against us the past few years, so that's a nice change.
Louis quietly stuffed that stat sheet and played an all around solid game. They still can't run a fast break and DNH still can't finish strong, but the passing was really nice. 20 turnovers but it's misleading since many came from guys who won't be playing too much going forward.
The most important post of this thread however may come from mr. james. I never thought we'd have to face the cold hard reality of this season with the same coach, but with the cupcakes they have scheduled it is going to be very easy for the AD to justify keeping him for another, especially if he's still under the super secret contract. What a nightmare.

A good night, overall. Great to see big nights from Sam Jones and Greg Louis. Matt Howard had a very solid game, as well.
While it is very good for the team to have the three game win streak, the overall weakness of Navy, Binghamton and Marist makes it hard to be overconfident going forward.
The improved play of the last week or two has at least given pause to some who have been down on the coach. With the harder part of the schedule coming up after the break, a much clearer picture of coach and team will take shape as evaluations are made by the AD.

When did Greg Louis develop that soft look from the line? It was a thing of beauty. And what more needs to be said about Sam Jones. What a stroke. I don't know what you guys are talking about. This was my first look at Penn this year and we are great.

"we were great??" DNH was 2-7 (mostly missed layups) and Hicks was 1-8. We made 20 turnovers. We dominated the boards, but that was greatly helped by Marist shooting 21%. We got a great game from Jones and a very solid game from Louis. Other than that, Marist was very very bad. Again, we'll take the "W" but let's not celebrate this one.

I wonder if Sam Jones is a parting gift from former assistant Scott Pera? Jones is from Arizona and Pera made his mark at Arizona State. If so, thanks coach!
As for Morse v. Lang, you sound like my dad waxing elegiac about Temple: "Bill Mlkvy used to hit these set shots from 70 feet every time!"

I agree with Steve Chop. Morse was unreal. Highlight was Penn Duquesne at WVU. Their fans were screaming let him shoot from there. Within 10 minutes they were yelling get that guy.

sam Jones played on an AAU team coached by Tyler Bernardini. We were hard after a kid who ended up at Indiana and then focused on Sam.

I think DNH should spend a half hour each practice shooting from close in with a body leaning on him. And he should try getting off the ground and shooting from the highest point possible. He needs some lift and extension and to practice with a body on him.

I never imagined there would be a moment to wax poetic about Pat Lang on this board, but here we go.
Pat, who was exceptionally kind to me as a freshman, used to stand 5 or sometimes 10 feet behind the line during a common defensive drill called "shell" drill where defensive players practice help positioning. After one or two passes, he would always launch a shot, often because he was bored with the drill (we did it everyday).
Enough of those shots went in that Dunph almost never screamed at Pat, as he would have with any other player who pulled such a trick - it was always the defensive player's fault for not covering enough ground.
The sight of Pat Lang stifling laughter while some poor wing defender got chewed out for not covering him 10 feet away from the basket during a defensive slide positioning drill remains one of my favorite recurring practice moments.

Sheesh, I barely remember Pat Lang. Certainly don't recall him being a regular starter. How much playing time did he generally get?

As a junior, he didn't play at all. He then chose not to come back and play his senior season.
He does brag about having the highest field goal percentage in Penn history. He was 7-7 in his career, including one cheesesteak shot. That will be hard to beat.
But I sense any discussion of Pat Lang as the "best shooter" in Penn history is a little tongue-in-cheek.

David Lardner was an exceptional shooter from distance. Had he had the 3 pt shot available to him, he would probably have shot it a lot, and scored a lot of points with it.

I remember the Duquesne game well. They had twin (really twins) towers (the Nelson twins?) and they stayed under the basket while Bobby was bombing away from out side where the arc would be now. Every once and a while you'd see them running back up court, shaking their heads.

Two other great shooters from my time at Penn:
Chris Elzey, recruited by Littlepage I believe.
A kid named Pettibone (sp?). Forget his first name. Had as beautiful a jump shot as I've ever seen. Didn't get much playing time.
Naturally, Schneider ran them both off the team.

Lardner, Elsey, Schiffner..Bigelow....all those guys could shoot (I'm just too young to remember Morse)but they all needed space. Jones comes off a pick and BANG! He is a very quick jumper and doesn't need to set. He'll be a really good one.

Kegler is the best comparison as right now Jones' shooting ability seems to be well ahead of his other skills.
I agree he has a chance to be pretty good. I hope it is as a all-around player and not just a shooter.
And that's not a knock on Kelger - he couldn't create his own shot, but I bet he shot a higher percentage on open looks from 3 than anyone else in my Penn history (since 1978).

Kegler, no doubt. Best Ever.
Led the nation (I believe) in 3PFG% in 1994-95, and wasn't bad in 1993-94 either.
Looking up the stats...
1992-93 19-45 (42.4%)
1993-94 36-80 (45.0%)
1994-95 58-114 (50.9%)
So total for his career when he was a regular rotation player (he was 3-9 in his freshman year, so I didn't count that), he was 113-239, or 47.3%. I can't imagine anyone has ever been better that has had extended run (and shots), and in fact he is the all-time leader in 3FG% (even factoring in his freshman year).
