I was there in '81, and remember going to Memorial Stadium for a day game, stopping at a nearby bar first for a Nat Premium (can only get the much worse Natty Bo these days) and a giant sandwich for about $3 which you could take into the park. Sadly, baseball went on strike within about 2 weeks of my arrival, and was out until the week I left. But baseball and life itself in that city was very different 35 years ago.

Yes, Philly stadia have kosher offerings. But they are so drastically overpriced that I never buy it.

True that.
Until the new ball bark, you could walk into Memorial Stadium any evening and get a bleachers seat for 3 bucks. When the Os moved, their AA farm team, the Baysox, played one season in Memorial. The games were a hoot. Kids ran around chasing fly balls in the seats. A well-timed catcall could be enjoyed by everyone in the park. There were even side attractions to draw fans. One staged act involved a fan with small child going up to an umpire, introducing the child to man in blue, umpire distracted and turning around, kid kicking umpire in backside. High Vaudeville. A more innocent time.
God, I'm getting old!

Do you remember the Baltimore [colts] of the CFL playing there for one season? Their name could not be used because of trademark.

I do. The Canadian brand was quite exciting, larger field, more wide open. But, Baltimore is an NFL city with a chip on its shoulder. The city never accepted the ... I've even forgotten its name!...even though it won a championship in its only season here. (I just asked my wife, a lifelong Baltimoron about the team's name. She doesn't even know what I'm talking about.).
Ravens fans still have a special grudge against the city of Indianapolis. It even stole the team mascot as an enduring reminder of its midnight heist.

This entire thread about old Baltimore is killing me. Went to 20 games a year in Memorial while the O's were there, and I had season tickets to the Baysox that year in Memorial. Can't embrace Camden Yards.
I agree with Johns Waters: the inner harbor (no caps) was better when it was sailors, lesbian bars and rats.
Tiger69's characterization of the city is spot on. Quirky indeed.
I lived in Pikesville as a shagitz for about 5 yesrs. Quite an experience. See the movies of Barry Levinson, especially Avalon (You couldn't wait to cut the turkey?) and Tin Men. Still drive across town to get my bagels at Goldsteins. Best experience was buying ground sage for the turkey stuffing in Christmas Day in a busy supermarket in the heart of Pikesville.

Apologies for carrying this discussion on the Penn board, so I'll shut up my reminiscences now. I've enjoyed others'. But, one idea does occur to me. Next year the tourney might try the Baltimore Civic Center (now, regrettably known as Royal Farms Arena ). I know, distant location for most of the Ivies, but still neutral with many alumni from each of the Ancient Eight living in the Philadelphia-Balto-DC area. I would fly East simply to hear others' stories at one of the few remaining good watering holes in and around the city.

While I too have heard that the tournament is likely to move next year, I think the most likely location is in the NY Metro area. I cannot conceive of the schools agreeing to play in Baltimore, the site of one of Penn's toughest NCAA losses---in 1995 in OT to Alabama and Antonio McDyess.
But Royal Farms does have that rocking chicken.

Just musing on my part. Probably better for everyone in NYC area.
Incidentally, 1LP1969, you taught me a new word, "shegitz", which, I guess, more accurately describes us than "goys"?
Comments from learned colleagues out there more versed in Yiddish?

I've enjoyed the detour down memory lane and the good spirit amongst Ivy rivals would make my high school English teacher Eleanor Brangan proud. It's also a nice diversion from less civil antics going on in a city south of Baltimore.
But when can we get back to insulting one another? We don't have much time!

In here, we're all old farts reminiscing about our Glory Days.
But at the Palestra on Saturday, there will be plenty of time for (good natured) insults.
Are any of the Princeton guys actually going to the game? There may be an inch of snow on the ground!

Barry Levinson captures a mood and feel of a place better than anyone else.
Diner/Avalon/Liberty Heights (especially the last two) really nail the mood of what it was like to be Jewish in Baltimore during the late 50s/early 60s. Diner also has a great overlay of the importance of the Colts to the community.

That is where Penn had its memorable Purim NCAA tourney contest that went to OT against Antonio McDyess.

Peepee sh!t. We have several feet in Silverton (where I am ... NOT, right now).
I might go to the tourney when there is something to GAIN rather than lose.
But, I hope everyone has a good time, especially fellow Tigers.

Neither term is one that you'd want to highlight on your resume. The difference is that a goy is a gender neutral term while sheygitz refers to males only (the counterpart to the female shiksa).

Thanks for the explanation, PN. Happily, my resume days are long past, so I can insult myself any way I want. My mother, born in a Jewish hospital, used to claim that she was switched at birth. So, I might not be a WASP after all.

Wow, this thread really took a turn. I guess there really is no way to beat Princeton!
Truthfully, it looks like a tall order. It sounded like their personnel are suited to attack the 1-3-1, and that they are big and good, which makes the man to man matchups tough. Hoping that the upgrade to Goodman and Betley makes a difference. I think our best shot is heroics from Howard and 40+ percent three point shooting. It would help to outrebound Princeton the way we did against Harvard.

Penn needs to force turnovers and to get out and run for pull-up treys and layups. Getting Brodeur down the court early for a secondary break opportunity before the double-teamers can get set wouldn't hurt either. I like the Quakers a lot more when the defense against them isn't fully settled.

That would certainly help. My memory (without the benefit of checking box scores) is that Howard was completely absent/awful in both Princeton games this year. Also, don't recall Brodeur having any impact in either game.
I have to say, Princeton clearly had the best defense in the league hands down and that had a lot to do with it. They also seem to have just gotten better and better as the year went on. Having trouble seeing this as a 4 point line.
But I agree with P38 - it's house money at this point. Here's to a boisterous crowd and some luck. I will be endcourt in row 5.
